It sometimes is wild that corporations just wildly violate our privacy, surveil us all across the Internet, burn countless tokens to process the data... and wind up with mediocre profiles like "uh he likes coffee? And sci-fi novels I think?"

Plus.... it's been doing similar things for YEARS now. I guess they're just repackaging how they give the info. But there's been a recommended section on Amazon for many years now based on your viewing and buying history. THIS ISN'T EVEN NEW! lol

That's the part that annoys me. Amazon has known where I live and what I do since 2011. It does not need ai for this. But since it is using ai, it thinks I am two people and a dog.

So amazon has an "about you" section where their "AI" put together ad preferences based on your purchase/browsing history. And while some people are like "this is wild the machine knows me so well," it feels like a version of cold reading where it's like, "well, duh" for all of it.

from the article: In one case, the judge concluded that “real terrorists would not have bothered themselves with a person who was so utterly inept” because “only the government could have made a terrorist out of” the defendant, “a man whose buffoonery is positively Shakespearian in its scope."

In many many cases post 9/11, the FBI targeted vulnerable Muslim individuals and actively radicalized them, instead of locating and finding already radicalized people. There are a ton of people prosecuted this way who - had it not been for the FBI - would never have considered terrorism.
In terrorism sting operations, government informants facilitate or encourage the commission of terrorism offenses, enabling the prosecution of suspects who agree to commit them
(Hay 2005). Stings have the potential to prevent terror attacks by infiltrating terrorist conspiracies, which may have occurred in a few cases. Yet, in numerous post-9/11 investigations, government informants have targeted individuals with no previous terrorist plans for
aggressive inducement attempts, even though the defendants would realistically never have
committed terror offenses on their own (Said 2015). In some cases, informants attempted
to radicalize defendants, repeatedly pressured them, or offered them hundreds of thousands of dollars to commit a terrorist offense (Norris and Grol-Prokopczyk 2015). Many
defendants were severely mentally ill or were so inept or dysfunctional that it is extremely
unlikely they could have engaged in terrorism independently (Aaronson 2013). As Human
Rights Watch concluded, the FBI’s “discriminatory and overly aggressive” operations—
primarily against Muslim-Americans—“created terrorists out of law-abiding individuals
by… facilitate[ing] or invent[ing] the target’s willingness to act” (2014: 2, 21).

this has been a huge strategy for law enforcement following 9/11. a ton of the arrests for terrorism are like this where an undercover entraps the individual and persuades them toward planning and facilitating crimes they never would've done: csrr.rutgers.edu/wp-content/u...

in a related thought, I would love to see a conversation about how To Catch A Predator and its popularity normalized this kind of pre-emptive entrapment style sting for the general public, leading to the conclusion that because the person was successfully induced, they were pre-disposed to crime.

I wonder, if you got them to honestly talk about their desires, how closely modern "my girlfriend is an AI" guys would cleave to that RealDoll owner dichotomy. Cuz as far as I can tell, some of thsoe dudes DEFINITELY seem to expect women to be jealous as well.

The 1st guy would dress up his doll like a goth baddie, put her on the couch, and watch TV with her. He talked about how he didn't feel anything was lacking, there; this really was sufficient, for him. The 2nd guy compared a non-virginal partner to eating another man's half-chewed bite of steak.

Years and years ago, the internet blew up with stories about dudes with RealDoll partners, and I remember two of them pretty clearly. One was a guy who seemed genuinely content with a silicone girlfriend. The other seemed convinced he could inspire anger and jealousy in real women by having one.

I am 100% in favor of whatever keeps "PUAs" away from actual flesh-and-blood women. They don't actually WANT real partners anyway, they want trophies to impress other men and fawning, compliant half-minds to affirm their every random thought, so it's a perfect match, really.

I think Reczek is right: estrangement is happening more now because the attitudes of children have changed. That doesn't mean children are the problem, even though that's what the story says.
Changing expectations of family relationships
"There is a culture clash happening right now between the meaning and dynamics of family," says Rin Reczek, a sociologist at Ohio State University and author of
"Families We Lose: A New Explanation for Family Estrangement®"
The parents of adult children grew up in a culture of "compulsory kinship," she says.
Families were supposed to be forever. Even when there were problems, adult children were expected to stay.
This idea is now increasingly challenged by a notion Reczek calls "democratized kinship"— the idea that maintaining family ties depends on their quality. Reczek's research found that people rely on accountability and growth, intentional connection, mutual respect and emotional safety to remain in a relationship.
"Think about how people started to think differently about marriage in the mid-20th century, that you could get out of it," Reczek says. "That is getting pushed out into other family relationships now."

Moving somewhere else is an ancient and time-honored way to ditch your shitty family, the problem is modern telecommunications make that not sufficient anymore. You’re not even charged extra for long distance calls anymore

Yeah. I think at least part of this trend is about increased expectations for how much contact adults should have with their parents. Moving out of town used to be a pretty effective way of "quiet quitting" parental contact; now one has to make a big deal about it to cut ties.

And you can't do that now, which I think accounts for a huge percentage of these cases. Even if you move across the country, a toxic parent can still reach you through calls, text, social media 24/7. If they're particularly bad, fully cutting them off can be the only way to get any distance at all.
