But why would you put your name and reputation behind a known pedophile to be the hero of this story, which is obviously so traumatizing. Are you being facetious?

Michael Tracey: Short answer: Epstein was insanely skilled at conflict-resolution on behalf of others. (Less so for his own legal snafus.) If you notice, he's in the above photo with Chomsky, for whom he resolved a complex dispute with Chomsky's adult children over access to his financial trust

Jessica Mortenson: Fair enough. But also, were you attempting to be provocative?

Michael Tracey: Well it's something I believe with 100% sincerity after a truly insane amount of Epstein research/ reporting. But I also realize that making such a point will be widely seen as inherently
"provocative"

You can't get anyone in political media to say it plainly, but GOP strategy for several decades now has been built around the fact that its core goals/policies are *wildly unpopular*. Everything depends on a) polluting the information environment, b) cementing unfair structural advantages, & c) $$$.

That film might beat the recent Snow White as far as all-time baffling casting decisions. If it fails (most likely), those on here will blame it on Depp, those on X will blame it on...pretty much EVERY other actor involved. It's as if Nolan cast Sorbo as Odysseus while keeping the rest of the cast.

You misunderstood; they ALMOST completed their own stealth fighter - they just have not managed to develop own engine for it (yet - same as with the Gripen.) Basically the only countries which make their own fighter jet engines are the US, the UK, Russia, France and China. It's very, very hard.

Granted, the contemporary low-observable aircraft have mostly gone up against pretty old radar models (same as jammer aircraft). It's at least conceivable ground-based AESA could be made powerful enough to threaten low-observable aircraft as successfully as the older systems targeted regular ones.

Let me rephrase; the argument implied the US would have accurately recognized Taiwan's sovereignty if only that didn't threaten its existence. This is undermined by all the entities that also not recognized by the US, even when it's far from obvious their recognition would threaten their existence.

Tbf, there's a massive difference between jamming a mechanically scanned radar (all Cold War-era systems and derivatives) and an actively or (even passively!) electronically scanned one. Those are just orders of magnitude better; it's gonna be interesting what happens when AESA diffuses more widely.

That would only be remotely controlled if Iran and Pakistan were equivalent. Not only is the Iranian tech generally much worse than what Pakistan possesses, but all those mountains also make for a more challenging radar environment. Hence, loads of successful attacks on Iran were from non-stealth.

If "accuracy" were the primary concern, then why are, say, Somaliland or the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic not recognized? In either case, that would be the more "accurate" thing to do as well, and war would be very unlikely if either were backed with even 1/10th of what Taiwan has been getting.
