My first neuroscience internship, in 2015, was an optogenetics study. Discovering the existence of this truly science-fiction level biotechnology, let alone having the opportunity to experiment with it myself, absolutely blew my mind. Great to see this Nobel go to all three phases of its development

"Allons enfants de la Patrie" 🫤 A 15 year old has lost a hand from the explosion of a dispersion grenade. Two other teenagers have lost eyes. Police brutality in France has been out of control for years, and the rest of the EU don't make them nearly ashamed enough of it.

It would be better for everyone if resolutions saying “Zionism is racism” also said, for example, “Hindutva is racism” and “Sinhala Buddhist nationalism is racism.” It might make Jews feel less singled out, but it would also force pro-Israel people to defend their ideology on its own terms.

Taking scientific production as an end-in-itself is disastrous in an env where AI can amplify prod. beyond all capacity for social cognitive digestion. If the end of science isn't the improvement of all individual human experience & if the enriching of cognition isn't part of that, what use is it?

An interesting exchange on how to react to Slop-as-evidence at the Oireachtas. Oireachtas committees hear from people with all sorts of views, and by definition, many of them diverge from each other. But they are actually their views. The people who come in expressed them.

I think this is a great and really important point. The entire marketing effort for AI is built around the promise of what's coming. And it has been for years now. The only way to avoid buying in to this incredibly destructive marketing scheme is to talk only about what is, not what might be.

For my anglophone audience : the president of my university invited the police on campus (they must have her permission to intervene) to dismantle students peacefully occupying a building and organizing to support the ongoing high school movement in France. The police were extremely violent.

Seriously, researchers vaunting LLMs for what they can do on a purely local level to putatively improve analysis & publication pipelines, where is it ye see society as a whole (that thing we mention in article intros) going if genAI achieves the saturation level necessary for it to not go bankrupt?

Affaire Jordan Bardella : le Président du parti fondé par des collabo et des waffen SS est donc antisémite. Une incroyable surprise pour absolument personne.
 Dessin d'actu d'Allan Barte.

Dear @erc.europa.eu , we DO already have common standards & frameworks. 'AI' likes to pose itself as 'special' but we do not need to reinvent the wheel. We already have established codes of conduct for research integrity. We just need to apply them. See below + more resources in thread🧵
Protecting the Ecosystem of Human Knowledge: Five Principles
We must protect and cultivate the ecosystem of human knowledge. AI models can mimic
the appearance of scholarly work, but they are (by construction) unconcerned with truth
— the result is a torrential outpouring of unchecked but convincing-sounding “informa-
tion”. At best, such output is accidentally true, but generally citationless, divorced from
human reasoning and the web of scholarship that it steals from. At worst, it is confidently
wrong. Both outcomes are dangerous to the ecosystem.
Olivia Guest, Iris van Rooij, Marcela Suarez, et al. (2025, n.p.)
Knowledge production is supposed to be safeguarded by (inter)national codes of conduct for research
integrity (ALLEA 2023; KNAW et al. 2018). Such codes forbid, for instance, fabrication of data,
falsification of results, plagiarism, and, generally, distortion of the scientific record. Many argue that
new rules are required to regulate academic AI use, but pre-existing guidelines fit the bill (cf. Tafani

All else aside (unreliability, cognitive off-loading, etc., etc., etc.), promoting any of these companies' products as useful parts of any scientific research pipeline seems quite short-sighted.

In an intelligent society, in light of Irish universities being €300m/annum underfunded, a proposition like this from an education minister would be a sackable offence. Naturally, in an intelligent society, nobody who would propose such a thing could ever become a minister in the first place either.
