Been reading Northanger Abbey + thinking about assault, as one does. In this book, Austen uses her teenage protagonist who expects Gothic-novel catastrophe at every turn to poke fun at the conventions of sensationalist fiction of her day. Ghosts, curses, kidnappings, trap doors, imperiled heroines.

Anyway I don't want to be accused of starting drama. I don't want to be assaulted, and I don't want to be a problem! So I leave and the men assume I'm tired or dull or maybe they don't care bc without me, they don't have to confront the creeps, they can claim ignorance and buy the bar another round.

Excellent thread! There *are* rewards for being A Good Guy Who Speaks Up even if they are not immediately obvious or publicly bestowed. First, integrity is its own reward. Maybe you didn’t save the world or change hearts & minds. But if you held the line on not making it worse, that’s something.

The last part is true but also, speaking as a woman here, plenty of us ARE paying attention. I think I remember every single man I’ve ever witnessed do something like this, even just online. It matters, to be seen. The habitually unseen don’t forget.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

This sums up my own experience in recent years. My theory is that there are so many genuine existential crises right now that people's instinct is to treat even low-stakes issues (movies! fandoms! personal preferences!) like existential crises. Makes having a normal conversation almost impossible.

LRT: I miss that so much about old Twitter. I followed smart, thoughtful, engaging people whose expertise I’d never have heard off-the-cuff any other way. Some of them were field experts and some had rare life wisdom, and a few, both. A privilege I didn’t take for granted and won’t forget.

A recurrent theme in this excellent story about China’s progress is that people there regard Trump as essential to their success, including his ability to drive scientific talent from the US www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
In Beijing, a think tank at Renmin University recently published an assessment titled
"Thank Trump," which wryly hailed his efforts to hasten the "twilight of an empire," by undermining America's alliances, civil service, scientific institutions, and democratic credibility. In the past two years, the international approval rating of the U.S. has dropped nearly forty points, according to a worldwide survey by the Alliance of Democracies; in multiple polls, China now rates higher than the U.S.

Philosophers often bring up the "principle of charity": a willingness to assume good faith in an interlocutor and treat them accordingly. It's good to do in many circumstances. But it is worth formulating a principle of not being a fucking mark. If not during the rise of fascism, then when? 12/

I think the Platner thing hit me so hard bc it was one of the most protracted, widespread acts of misogynist gaslighting from my own side that I've seen. We were presented with an obvious violent scumbag who was constantly lying (badly, might I add) and told we were crazy for not loving him

If roughing up a girlfriend and locking her in a room was a virile, authentic a rejection of “smoothgroined” “HR lady” politics, but a rape is too far, then what’s at stake is not a principled rejection of violence against women but a cynical assessment of how much violence a man can get away with.

War. And after that? War. And now? War. War. History might as well be water, chastising this shore. -Carol Ann Duffy, The Wound in Time, written on the occasion of the centenary of the first World War. #everynightapoem
It is the wound in Time. The century’s tides,
chanting their bitter psalms, cannot heal it.
Not the war to end all wars; death’s birthing place;
the earth nursing its ticking metal eggs, hatching
new carnage. But how could you know, brave
as belief as you boarded the boats, singing?
The end of God in the poisonous, shrapnelled air.
Poetry gargling its own blood. We sense it was love
you gave your world for; the town squares silent,
awaiting their cenotaphs. What happened next?
War. And after that? War. And now? War. War.
History might as well be water, chastising this shore;
for we learn nothing from your endless sacrifice.
Your faces drowning in the pages of the sea.

Carol Ann Duffy, ‘The Wound in Time’ (2018)

Days 33–37 of #the100dayproject. I’ve been taking a class with Sushma Hegde on loose watercolor florals (very different from my usual style!!) + I’m indebted to her style and artist Elizabeth Becker’s for inspiration for 37. Making loose strokes look easy + skillful is hard. Experiments continue
A photo of an open sketchbook. The left page is divided into four rectangular blocks, each with a painting of hellebores in a different style. The right page is a scribbly contour drawing of a bouquet in a glass. Everything is done in muted shades of purple, dusty rose, burgundy, and indigo.

Migraine has caused me to fall behind 😭 Here is my finished spread through day 32, March 25. After I finished, I sprayed the charcoal tulips, and forgot to cover the rest. The 2 little experiments with different daff arrangements bled… but I ended up liking the fuzzy look #100dayproject
A sketchbook spread of days 27–32 of the 100 Day Project. On the left page are two boxes drawn in ink. In one is a wobbly contour of a bouquet of flowers in a pitcher. In the other some daisy mums are sketched in ink outline. On the right page are four similar boxes dividing the page into rectangles. Two of the rectangles have gray paper pasted into them and on each are scribble line drawings of daffodil bouquets. Another box has a piece of reproduction vintage paper in a shade of camel with charcoal tulips drawn over it. The final box has a stamp of a real daffodil printed on it in black ink.

I made the mistake of starting this spread on the right-hand page on Friday, so Saturday I smeared charcoal all over it + the left page too. Bonus: got to play with erasers too. Day 27, 28, 29 — experiments with shape/line, one throughline of this project #the100dayproject
Photo of an open sketchbook. The left page is divided into two blocks, with daisy mums painted in outline in the top block, and a scribbly line drawing of a bouquet in a pitcher in the lower, larger block. The right page is only partially shown and the only thing on it so far is a rectangle cut from a piece of reproduction vintage paper with old cursive handwriting printed on it that I glued in. I drew silhouettes of two tulips in charcoal over the top.
