There should be a name for the beat that the characters in classic comedies take just after the delivery of a punchline. That pause. The silent reactions. Sometimes there’s a kind of inquisitive “What’s that you say?” grunt. It’s a “hold for laugh,” of course, but more specific than that.

LANTERNS is a much better/smarter show than you’re likely expecting. Clever plotting that plants seeds subtly. Dialogue that works through tacit implication instead of plodding exposition. There’s a lot of first-draft TV writing these days. This show feels like it’s been worked over, honed.
