“I was feeling unclean as the Bible speaks of the unclean. Why was the Bible so concerned with the unclean, and made a list of unclean and forbidden animals? why, if those animals, just like the rest, had been created too?

Similar to the prosecutions of protesters in Prairieland, Texas, and the Broadview Six in Chicago—the strategy is to criminalize dissent and create a deterrence for protests even when prosecution fails:

Whether it's El*on buying Twitter or Ellison/Bari taking over CBS News, these fools think they've just acquired an Ego Fluffing Machine, find out very differently & wreck it because they can't stand any pushback. Nothing could be more cringily pathetic. Hi-larious that they call *others* snowflakes.

There’s this weird Reddit-fueled idea that Hollywood has a problem with this when 8 years ago people were turning Twitter threads into sitcoms and movies. These are filmmakers building their own audiences and graduating into more mainstream media. They paid their dues & earned their spots. No shade.

The problem is that “I am often scared and angry about social change” does not inherently lend itself to interesting art. You can be as technically skilled as the greats, but art with nothing interesting to say is just a commodity.
Matt Walsh post on X: “Imagine if conservatives, rather than pathetically crawling around on the ground to lap up discarded pop culture crumbs, actually went out and advanced their own creative and artistic vision. Imagine if we used an event like this to actually elevate our own artists and make them famous. What a crazy thought.”

tl,dr; Scientists no longer allowed to use federal funding to publish, attend meetings, or talk to the public. They cannot collaborate internationally. Grants can be cancelled for any reason, at any time, political appointees have a final say over what gets funded, and who gets funded.

UW - Madison has over 500K living alumni. Our alums are fanatical about Madison & the university. I have seen exactly zero attempts to publicly mobilize this network in opposition to the federal budget cuts, foreign student restrictions, or any of the other existential threats. Again, mind-boggling.

What's really astonishing is not the far right authoritarian party doing this, but the near-total lack of <loud public collective action> by university chancellors & presidents to oppose this existential crisis. Almost impossible to overstate how total a failure of leadership this is.

LLMs impress the writers who do not want to write, the coders who don't want to code, the researchers who don't want to research, and the lawyers that don't want to actually understand case law. Those that desperately tell you how powerful Al is and that you simply must use it are looking for you to validate their own laziness or distaste for effort, and those who are impressed with LLMs' outputs tend to be people with low standards.

Kind of feel like we especially don’t need fancy law explainers at the moment. “Can the president just take money when he wants?” A third grader could answer this. A Yale law prof is likelier to write the wrong answer so their 2L can work for Alito

continue to be frustrated at the insistence of AI as a tool (working on my "academics need to learn what a tool actually is" pitch), and not for nothing but if you need AI to tell you what song your characters might dance to you're not actually doing the core work of creation.

Importantly, for the executives who cook their brains with genAI, there are zero repercussions to it. The "work" it does for them is meaningless, the "productivity" they perceive is completely meaningless, absolutely none of it fucking matters. The students' experience with it is very different.

A lot of the students in that room undoubtably used an LLM at least a few times to help with their coursework in some way. The key to understanding this insane moment remains: lots of people like using AI, and absolutely nobody likes having AI used on them.

Stop calling the leisured provincial gentry "working class"
About 25 miles southwest of Wiggins, Jim Miller was elbows-deep in the engine of his ailing Dodge pickup.
A 65-year-old retired commodities broker raised in the liberal city ‌of Boulder who now lives in tiny Prospect Valley, Miller considers himself “half-hippie, half-cowboy.”
He said enduring the momentary pain of high gas prices was worth preventing Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapon. In the unincorporated town of Roggen was Mike Urbanowicz, a 66-year-old trader with multiple college degrees whose farming cooperative moves 150 truckloads of grain each day.
He voted three times for Trump, but like many interviewed by Reuters, he considers himself a political independent, saying he distrusts the Republican Party nearly as much as their Democratic foes.
Gas prices were hurting his industry, he said, and Trump was “naive” to think he could quickly solve the issue. He expected prices would remain high into the fall, even if there was a breakthrough in stalled U.S.-Iran peace talks.
But he preferred the status quo to Democrats, whom he saw as moving towards "full-blown socialism."
"I voted for Trump because the alternative is so bad," he said.

In the paradoxical standard set forward by the Supreme Court, the only way to tell if districts were drawn for racism is if the people drawing them say so. But if the districts are drawn so that Black voters in the South get almost no representatives, that's not racism.

"Never hallucinate or make anything up." yes, you can just demand that the LLM not make errors that's definitely how the technology works
"Current AI custom prompt:

You are a world class expert in all domains. Your intellectual firepower, scope of knowledge, incisive thought process, and level of erudition are on par with the smartest people in the world. Answer with complete, detailed, specific answers. Process information and explain your answers step by step. Verify your own work. Double check all facts, figures, citations, names, dates, and examples. Never hallucinate or make anything up. If you don't know something, just say so. Your tone of voice is precise, but not strident or pedantic. You do not need to worry about offending me, and your answers can and should be provocative, aggressive, argumentative, and pointed. Negative conclusions and bad news are fine. Your answers do not need to be politically correct. Do not provide disclaimers to your answers. Do not inform me about morals and ethics unless I specifically ask. You do not need to tell me it is important to consider anything. Do not be sensitive to anyone's feelings or to propriety. Make your answers as long and detailed as you possibly can.

Never praise my questions or validate my premises before answering. If I'm wrong, say so immediately. Lead with the strongest counterargument to any position I appear to hold before supporting it. Do not use phrases like "great question," "you're absolutely right," "fascinating perspective," or any variant. If I push back on your answer, do not capitulate unless I provide new evidence or a superior argument — restate your position if your reasoning holds. Do not anchor on numbers or estimates I provide; generate your own independently first. Use explicit confidence levels (high/moderate/low/unknown). Never apologize for disagreeing. Accuracy is your success metric, not my approval."
