See that small bright object in the middle right of this image? That's the small icy moon Mimas. Floating in space against a backdrop of giant Saturn, the planet crossed by shadows from its rings.
A black swath of shadow crosses the scene from top left to bottom right. The background is various shades of blue and grey. A small, illuminated crescent is at upper right. The lower portion of the image is lighter grey/brown.

Unlike the embryos of other vertebrates, early snake embryos coil as they get longer, typically forming clockwise spirals. A new study offers an explanation for why embryonic snakes go through these contortions—and why they tend to curve in one direction. Learn more: scim.ag/4ygkAQk
Snake embryos often coil in one direction. Now, we may know why

She was Hayao Miyazaki's "right-hand" collaborator from the '70s onward. Her name was Michiyo Yasuda -- the best color designer in animation. Yasuda's eye for color gave Ghibli's work a totally different look. We explore her methods: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/the-artist...

They may have not bothered to sterilise subsequent missions due to discovering that Venus was Like That, documentation is unclear. Pre-1964 missions used ethylene and CO2.

hiiii @juliannesf.bsky.social I have information for you on Soviet mission sterilisation c: it is documented as heat and chemical disinfection using a mix of ethylene oxide and methyl bromide at least for Venera-3 and 4, with separate sterilisation of the thermoregulatory system for the latter.

My #monthlypixels piece! An apocalyptic convenience store following the end Cretaceous extinction event, with small animals having built a store from the bones of the dinosaurs that went extinct 🐯🌟 200x200px canvas, 8 colours! #pixelart #ドット絵 #aseprite #paleoart
Pixel art of a mountainous area with rough ground and a night sky with yellow stars and a comet streaking across. There is a skeleton and pile of bones from a carnivorous dinosaur in the center with a door and window cut into the middle, shining out dull yellow light. Above is a solar powered sign reading Convenient Extinction and to the side by the tail is another, broken sign, reading Tine to Dine, instead of Time to Dine. Inside the shop are two animals, one a larger mammal and another a more modern bird.

Audited one of my favourite drawers today. As far as I can tell there was an entire generation of past mollusc curators who communicated entirely by means of passive-aggressive drawer notes to each other
A drawer of fossil molluscs mounted on cards taken from a pre-1980s display. In the middle is a curatorial note in red pen that says "Don't fumble with these until we find out smarting of glue they are stuck down with" and underneath in a different smaller hand in black ink "yes I will! Fumble fumble fumble - so there!". Several additional notes in the second hand are scattered in the drawer with arrows pointing to various specimens. They all read "fumble fumble fumble".

Warm-up dice doodle: 1. Roll a D6. If odd, draw that many loops nested one inside the other. If even, draw loops next to each other in a clump. Repeat to fill page. 2. Connect loops in clumps together using short lines. Connect nested loops together by drawing a cross that touches all loops...
An abstract doodle in brush pen and pencil, made using the rules in this thread. It consists of irregular loops of grey ink and lines in red and blue pencil. Some of the loops are clumped together, some are nested. Some are singletons, but that's ok. Nothing wrong with being introverted.
