This is so upsetting
I worked at Smithsonian, specifically raising money for 250th. What I want people to know is we secured millions of private philanthropy to host a month long Folklife Festival on the mall, "The Festival of Festivals". Was going to feature well known festivals, think Burning Man, Farm Aid, Grand Ole Oprey etc. as well as smaller local and regional festivals from across the U.S. and territories. Goal was to feature truly the best and most beautiful creative expression in music, dance, arts and craft traditions, food, community etc. Can't name names but plan was to have headliners every night for free concerts.... Think the types of names who might be affiliated with the aforementioned large festivals. Stars were willing to perform because was under banner of Smithsonian. It had to all be scrapped bc the administration would not release permits to host on the mall. The money went elsewhere, but our nation was robbed of what would have been a once in a generation cultural moment.

Everything is like this now One of the battles of our generation will be to destroy all efforts to dismiss truth as a central ingredient for how we process the world I remember when JD Vance said he doesn’t regret lying about Haitians because ‘it started a conversation’ It’s why I hate GenAI too.

Ai can’t actually replace people and the problem is that people think it might be able to. The loop this article describes is both impossible to maintain and also impossible to fully automate.

The climate abuse needs to be seen as similar to other forms of violence. The wealthy petroindustry interests propagandísing against doing anything about this have AC, they have healthcare, they have empires of glass and steel built in the desert and they dont care about mass displacement and death.

Mastodon post that says: I feel like I'm one of the remaining unbitten characters in a zombie movie.

In the past week:
- marked student papers with clear LLM use
- attended student hearing for academic integrity due to LLM use
- received peer review comments that seemed AI generated
- important email from a colleague that was riddled with banal LinkedIn-ese and must also be LLM-generated

It goes beyond this to a macro level. "Don't be lazy, get a job and contribute to society" is an American ethos that American business policy does not uphold. We have a target unemployment rate around 4%-5%. If too many people have jobs, the government works to fix that "problem."

An example on the former is food. We produce enough food to feed the world. If we boosted corn yields 10% that wouldn't help starving people because they are prevented from being fed. Preventing people from from is related to productivity -- for instance you can prevent more with more efficiency.

America's roughly 1,100 billionaires (and 1 trillionaire) are collectively worth a record $9.24 trillion. The wealth of the bottom half of the US, roughly 65 million households? $4.3 trillion. It's not radical to tax the rich. It's radical to allow this level of wealth concentration to continue.

Some people have a profound interest in disentangling the supposed “inevitable” advance of AI from the massive amount of capital determined to make it advance in the first place. But without that capital backing, AI wouldn’t be taking over everything. It’s contingent, not natural.
