Much wisdom in this thread, including the idea that instead of talking about being pro or anti AI, we should be talking about what is pro learning. This is what has motivated all of my work on writing and AI: Start with what it is that we actually want students to experience/become/be able to do.

More than any higher ed development in recent memory, institutional subsidies for AI at R1 universities prove that austerity is a choice. It is not “too expensive” to invest in a humanities research infrastructure; rather, it is a choice that R1 universities make not to & subsidize AI instead.

The US President's new proposal to tax international students has been approved by the White House for release this week. It's an unprecedented $100,000 tax on int'l grads who stay to work after graduation on Optional Practical Training (most grads do), a crucial bridge to remaining by any channel.

A very good letter in the @chronicle.com by @lsiraganian.bsky.social & other JHU AAAUP members debunking the fake crisis of declining public trust in higher education and highlighting a real one: university administrators willing to collaborate with authoritarians. www.chronicle.com/blogs/letter...
Excerpt from article: Compact 2.0 relies on misleading rhetoric citing a lack of public trust in higher education. Ironically, public trust in higher education, including medical and scientific researchers, ranks higher than in all three branches of government, including the President, Congress, and the Supreme Court, as well as tech companies, according to Gallup data. Although polls show trust has declined over the past decade, this is part of a larger trend affecting all US institutions — not just universities. The mistrust in US institutions is, in part, a symptom of the Trump administration’s erosion of democratic norms and the rule of law and use of anti-university, “adaptable authoritarian rhetoric” from Russia and Hungary. As the Brookings Institution notes, “targeting higher education is an essential tool in the autocratic playbook.” Beyond polls, data tell a different story. College enrollment is stabilizing or rising despite demographic decline and the unaffordability crisis. Most high school students want to attend college. Globally, students trust our universities to provide unparalleled educational and research opportunities. International student enrollment continued to rise until the Trump administration’s anti-immigration measures caused a decline. In the U.S. and around the world, millions of students and their families work hard to earn a spot in our classrooms and to save money to pay for it.

The new Chicago Social Sciences AI policy is really rather good. chicagomaroon.com/flipbook/202... > The strong consensus [] is that our sequences are best understood as a pedagogical setting without AI And INB4 🤡 "bUt tEChnoLogY is inEVItablE", this kicker of a closing paragraph:
To be clear: The twin decisions to put devices away and prioritize, instead, the cultivation of our own minds through discussion is not intended as a restriction -- nor is the guidance for SOSC Core a wholesale rejection of technology, which can be used for good scholarly purposes in other parts of the curriculum. In support of our learning objectives, these guidelines afford students the freedom to think for themselves, to listen to one another without the cacophony of other (disembodied and non-human) voices in the room, to make mistakes, and to change their minds as they engage with thinkers of the past, with us, and with their fellow students in good faith, face-to-face.
