Just the dumbest collection of halfwit confetti emerging out of that conference. Tax cuts everywhere, paid for with imaginary spending cuts. Huge spending projects with precisely zero utility, except to anchor their 'defence day' narrative. Clowns.

We've now had essentially the same sorts of scandals in homecare, family day care, employment services, NDIS, veterans, residential aged care and ECEC. (I'm sure I've missed some in that list.)

At some point we need to conclude that the waste, fraud and poor / bad outcomes for people is a feature, not a bug of voucher-based delivery of social services. It flows directly from the mode of economic organisation of the programs in their current forms. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

Economists are calling the problem “shockflation”: price surges triggered not by excessive demand but by severe supply shocks in systemically important sectors. trib.al/xrRjscR

Could a German economist fix the RBA’s inflation problem?
As the RBA admits interest rates are its only tool for managing inflation, alternative models propose dealing with supply shocks through price caps and strategic reserves.

Having been fortunate enough to spend a few summers in a rural NSW town with a swimming pool, this really stings. It seems wild to me that the NSW government will hand over endless wads of cash to professional sport but won’t help councils keep a pool open. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

In spite of being of the correct generation to have grown up while "Peanuts" was still in active publication, it's always a little surreal to be reminded that the most popular comic strip in the English-speaking world for fifty solid years was about an eight-year-old with clinical depression.

Italian asset swaps just had their biggest moves since Covid. Euribor’s are swinging around intraday like it’s Covid. French asset swaps are a graveyard of leveraged traders. Oil is +4% and front end sofr rallied 15 anyway. This is extremely concerning behaviour.

Everyone's said all there is to say about Schmitt's hilarious "Hawks" boner. But the part that I keep coming back to is that Schmitt apparently thought proving Smith was in Atlanta would somehow prove some cross-prosecutorial conspiracy. Then he didn't bother to confirm if Smith ever was in Atlanta.
