We probably shouldn't have the DNI double dipping as the AI Tsar. Also if you graduated from law school in 1993, we are going to need your well handle before you're cleared to do anything related to frontier models. There are hand full of people with a law degree from that era who could do it.

Probably the best ai provisions in journalism. Really interesting that the bargaining unit includes both (unlike, say, the much bigger NYT). So the ai protections are both about the front-end (intellectual property) and the back-end (procurement, training)

Capital always controls the investment function. American labor has historically ceded the ground on the production process. AI is interesting bc the vampire tendency of dead labor is readily visible to creative workers and they feel licensed to argue over it bc work product is both input & output

I feel like I am going to be thinking about this all week. Student experience is also typically framed in light of elite institutions. Working at a community centered state university, my students have a different set of concerns that make the "real world" framing even more hollow.

A consistently pernicious framing of student experience is that they are not in the “real world” yet, as if the debt they’re accruing and incessant punitive surveillance of their labor and speech isn’t entirely of a piece with the broader cultural moment.

This isn't flash, a janky system that needs to be retired because it is riddled with critical security bugs, its javascript, an essential language for the web.

Zack @wildbookchase.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That works great for blog posts, but if you want to talk to a data system that needs heavy governance, or was bleeding edge 20 years ago, and for various reasons couldn't migrate to a more modern data model and system, than XSTL would be how you handle the XML that these systems generate.
120
Zack @wildbookchase.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
For those wondering what the heck XSTL is, its the language that tells the browser how to turn XML into other things, like HTML. It lets a web based site or app to talk to a relational database. Lots of web stuff uses JSON, or talks to a MYSQL database.

Zack @wildbookchase.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
!?! This is going to break so much stuff. Also there are a lot of more modern sites that interact with XML on the back end, through patches. I would be shocked if a lot of essential government websites, wind up broke.

The idea of a "tech industry" has always relied on "computer" being a special kind of medium, akin to alchemy. And if tech demands to be king, AI hype has now elevated LLMs to a king of kings. But the solipsism has hit a dead end. The only way forward is to recognize that computers are not special.
productpicnic.beehiiv.com
LLMs are just normal technology. But tech is just a normal medium.
The more we focus on a particular technology, the more we lose sight of what normal people actually care about.

Rumors about “rigged elections" are now a fixture of U.S. elections, leading to diminished trust in election results & democracy (broadly). These rumors can sometimes be hard to debunk, esp. in their early stages. Our UW team has identified the 6 common ways that election integrity rumors mislead:
Infographic titled "Six Ways 'Rigged Election' Rumors Mislead." A two-column table pairs six labeled categories with descriptions. The first three categories are:

No Evidence: The rumor is entirely unsubstantiated. There's no evidence to support the rumor.

Fake/False Evidence: The rumor is based on fake or synthetic evidence (e.g. AI-generated content), manipulated evidence, or false witness testimony.

Misinterpreted Evidence: This rumor is based upon real evidence that has been misinterpreted or intentionally mischaracterized to create a false impression.

A black banner then introduces the final three categories: "Real Evidence, Real Voting Issue, False Narrative."

Exaggerated Impact: The rumor centers on a real issue with voting but falsely insinuates or exaggerates impact on election results.

Ignored Remedies: The rumor centers on a real issue with voting but ignores and/or obscures the remedies that would address this problem

False Blame: The rumor centers on a real issue with voting but either falsely attributes intent for an accidental issue or places blame on an innocent party.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

They started replacing the art they didn't appreciate, then: "Conservative groups and friends of the president staged events for free or at steep discounts, including a conference on 'ending Christian persecution.' The center threw parties and dedicated rooms to Trump donors and political allies."
Workers renovated Mr. Trump’s three theater boxes in the center, installing gold plumbing fixtures and tearing up newly laid tile whose color was not to the liking of the White House. In one email, a Kennedy Center staff member, Lisa Dale, alerted colleagues to Mr. Trump’s demand for a certain type of tree on campus: “Our Chairman loves maple trees and is insisting we plant maple trees from a very specific Grove by a very specific gardener. :) I actually love this about him!”

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.
