Gas prices have risen dramatically this year. For the typical driver, that's $65 more spent on gas monthly. If you're a typical F-150 driver in states like Alabama, Kansas, Mississippi, or Missouri, you're spending >$350 a month on gas now. We've got to give people other options.

Rising Gas Prices Are Punishing Household Finances. Policymakers Should Invest in Transit to Reduce Household Costs.
Amid months of rising gas prices, a typical driver now spends $65 more on fuel each month today than they did a year ago.

Jean Valentine, wow
Outside the Frame

It is enough, now, anywhere,
with everyone you love there to talk to.

And to listen.
Slowly we can tell each other some things about our lives:
runs, rests, brief resolutions; falls, and lulls;
hard joyful runs, in certainty; dull, sweet
durances, human silences;
                                                        look back in at the children,
the regular, neutral flicker of their blood; pale, solemn,
long-legged animal-gods in their sleep,
growing into their lives, in their sleep.

BREAKING 📣 For several days, a peaceful protest took place in the morning, after a young child was killed by a car driver. The child was riding his bike to school, the father with him. The grieving community came together with hundreds of people, cyclist or not, creating a 3km long human bike lane.

It's purple and turquoise. The front end is looking away from the camera and has a textured nobbly back. the bookend of a 'bookwyrm' i made doing its job and holding up some books! I'm having a lot of fun at #CampChimera especially an excuse to research and draw critters!
Pen sketch of a flamboyant cuttlefish, with a smooth body with random projections and a bunch of curled tentacles in front.

Handwritten text reads Ascarosepion pfefferi. Native to indo-pacific ocean. Diurnal Hunter of fish and crustaceans. Camouflage helps them stalk prey. Their flesh contains a unique toxin, sometimes advertised with bright colors to dissuade predators. Their skin can change colors rapidly to adapt to their environment in beautiful, hypnotic displays. Two handwritten pages of a notebook decorated with floral washi tape and stickers.

Summer goals: 100,000 steps in June. Earn all merit badges. Practice releasing perfectionism.

Second page titled Eco Engagement, above an ink drawing of a hairy bee labeled Anthidium species.

There are seven species of leaf cutter bees native to the Puget Sound region. Access to native plants and undisturbed soil is important for their conservation. These bees cut sections of leaves to create cell divisions in their roots. They carry pollen on the large bellies, careful not to rub it off until they get home.

The hairs are called "scopa" and it helps them due to the right entrances of their nest cavities where pollen may be lost from their legs compared to other bees. Handwritten page titled Insect Friend, Monday 6/2. Pen and ink drawing of a wild flower. Hanging from the center is the large abdomen of a spider with dimples and a pink stripe, who is holding a bee.

The flower spider, Misumena varia, are found in Europe and N America. They ambush pollinators on flowers. Their vision is great, and their color and pattern can adjust to their surroundings during each molt. Their venom is harmless to people.

this is a letter to the editor from a high school track runner who came in second to a trans girl in a race. her state house rep in maine started talking about it. so she wrote this: www.pressherald.com/2025/05/14/r...
Rep. Laurel Libby, R-Auburn, recently used my second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run, and that of my teammate in the 800-meter run, to malign Soren Stark-Chessa, the trans-identified athlete who finished first.

One of the reasons I chose to run cross-country and track is the community: Teammates cheering each other on, athletes from different schools coming together, and the fact that personal improvement is valued as much as, if not more than, the place we finish.

Last Friday, I ran the fastest 1,600-meter race I have ever run in middle school or high school track and earned varsity status by my school’s standards. I am extremely proud of the effort I put into the race and the time that I achieved. The fact that someone else finished in front of me didn’t diminish the happiness I felt after finishing that race. I don’t feel like first place was taken from me. Instead, I feel like a happy day was turned ugly by a bully who is using children to make political points.

We are all just kids trying to make our way through high school. Participating in sports is the highlight of high school for some kids. No one was harmed by Soren’s participation in the girls’ track meet, but we are all harmed by the hateful rhetoric of bullies, like Rep. Libby, who want to take sports away from some kids just because of who they are.

During one of my birdwatching trips to eastern of India, stumbled upon this jewel. I was most captivated by their habitat; the groves were so densely vegetated, visibility was minimal. However, so many species not only survive but thrive in such tough conditions. Fishing cat is one of them, nocturnal and shy. For this kingfisher, though their bill and frontal body parts are a big giveaway, they shine like a lamp in the thick dark habitat.

Here seen sitting in the branch early morning waiting for his next snack, shadows created by the canopy create enough shade for the school of fishes to gather. This provides ample opportunity for the King to hunt. Though early morning, the light was not enough to get my focus right. Had to use one of my torches to light the bird, which enabled my camera to focus, hence the two sources of light on the subject. Done my possible best to depict this magical habitat!Spotted Owlet published on Indian Birds Cover Indian Birds is a forefront book on Indian ornithology.
