What time is it? It’s #Cheliceratime ! Today's entry is one of the most famous eurypterid, Megalograptus ohioensis! All the basic infos are here but if you want to learn more, there’s more in the thread below!⬇️🧵 #arthropod #ordovician #paleoart #eurypterid #sciart #bugsky 1/4
This famous arthropod was one of the biggest eurypterids during the Ordovician period, and its genus was first identified as a graptolite. It’s well-known for the long spines on its second pair of legs and for the semi-lunar shape of its telson.

Size : a bit more than 50cm of body length
Time period : Late Ordovician
Paleoart speculativometer : Almost a carbon copy

The animal drawn looks a bit like a scorpion but without pincers, with instead large spiny arms

Illustration of a Standard-winged Nightjar doing a display flight in front of a big beautiful glowing full moon. The nightjar, a mottled gray/brown/white bird, has long pointed wingtips, a short stubby beak, and a big black eye. It is flying with wings bent low in an upside-down U shape while wiggling its strange "standards" - elongated huge shiny black primaries that bend upward from the wings and look like black pointed flags.

#Abditosaurus, a #sauropod #dinosaur described in 2022 from the most complete European titanosaur skeleton found so far. Its name, meaning "forgotten reptile", references the fact that its remains were partially excavated in the 1950s before being left for decades when funding was lost.

I made this (now very outdated!) reconstruction of the bizarre ankylosaur #Spicomellus when the first fossil rib was described in 2021, and further remains have shown it was much more intimidating than my very speculative early guess! I'm still fond of this cute little friend though.

An older reconstruction I made in 2020 of #Gordodon, a Permian synapsid with a sail and unusual buck teeth that differentiate it from its better-known relative Edaphosaurus. I'm still really proud of the colours and lighting I had going on in this piece!

Permian synapsid #Moschops squares up! I think they have an uncanny-valley charm when viewed from our mammalian perspective, and would have been very intimidating in person. If the attitudes of our big herbivorous mammals are anything to go by, it would probably be best to keep your distance!

An illustration of a Burbot (a type of fish) swimming in deep water. The water is dark - almost black - and the bottom is a mixture of sand, silt, and rocks. The burbot is in three-quarter view, and the front is illuminated while the back fades into the background. A school of small, nondescript silver fish swim beneath the burbot.

Atlantic Puffin illustration imagined with a visibly fluorescent beak. It is a round dumpling of a bird, black with a white face and white belly, posed at night in front of rocky mountains and a starry sky. The beak's normal striped orange-yellow-gray pattern glows vividly turquoise with the pale stripes forming blue-tinted triangles.

A fuzzy-bodied, scaly-tailed beaked dinosaur runs for cover amid shrubby plants. The tallest, Williamsonia hildae (centre-left), is shown in several life stages (see leaves emerging from the ground, as a single branching pair, and then again as a small tree/tall bush). The other, shrubbier species on the right is Williamsoniella coronata.
