Is it time to post that paragraph from The Road To Wigan Pier? The one about how the desperate, pleasureless poor will always refuse to just spend their pennies on cabbage no matter how much you try and insist. This isn’t a thing you can make people do. It’s not how humans work.

Worth noting — as most coverage omits it — that Peggie called Dr. Upton "a freak", "a weirdo" and "it". Peggie said she would like to post bacon to a mosque. Peggie reacted to news of deaths in flooding in Pakistan by saying "What goes around comes around, they've been flooding Britain for years."

All of this
As you ride the train, at each progressively more indefensible stop, you'll be told it's the last one. But it won't be.
Labour thinks moving to the right on social issues takes them "off the table." And this is at the heart of the centrist con:
You can do this, they say, and still be a good person. You'll make a few compromises, but you'll "remain supportive," and trans people will continue to be "protected," as Jon Cowan and Seth Moulton respectively put it.What will actually happen is you'll do horrific things while delusionally maintaining the fiction of yourself as a good person. Labourites have not carefully balanced rights, they have not made an ugly compromise to defeat the fascist threat, or even cynically cemented their own hold on power. They have, in fact, just viciously attacked the rights, safety, and dignity of a minority
group. And for the right, it will never, ever, ever be enough.

A helpful summary of a long running project though: social media creating a credible risk that the public might impose their awful views upon their superiors by e.g. shamefully dictating which public figures are good and should be praised, and which behave badly and deserve contempt.

Or: if the right were just always greedy, looting bastards and venal reactionary psychos, then what exactly have we been playing at all these long, long years? And who are we supposed to compromise with now 😫
Disagree this is widespread but it certainly exists, often alongside 'my enemy's enemy is my friend'. The failure of the decent centre right at this moment is actively harming our country. Much as I would love to always have a left-wing Gov, the necessity of a decent centre right is surely obvious?

Andy Burnham says this whilst sitting on the most aggressive anti-protest laws of our lifetimes, which have been used to arrest and charge nuns for holding signs protesting a genocide.
It was because Manchester’s humble mill workers took a principled stand.

During the American civil war, despite the hardships it brought them, they refused to touch raw cotton that had been picked by slaves.

In 1862, people with little power used it to help those with none on the other side of the world.

The best change is change like that, bottom-up change led by people.

And whatever distorted view social media offers today, the world is still full of good and decent people who are ready stand up for what is right.

Piddington is not an immigration issue, it's a women's issue.
Everyone should feel safe in their home. But the women I spoke to in Piddington are terrified, and the Government isn't listening.
Enough is enough. We need to leave the ECHR, deport all illegal arrivals and protect communities like Piddington.

The leader of the Tories made a Neo-Nazi criminal an anti-racism and anti-extremism adviser, because she’s so disastrously online she couldn’t see an issue with him having harassed an MP so horrendously that he was sent to prison for it. All the lads hemmed and hawed a bit, until it went away.
may get shouted out for this, but it's a real observation: Polanski has a pattern of behaviour of making trouble for himself by telling fibs when he absolutely doesn't need to do so. He lies reflexively and then creates several more news cycles as a result. 1/3

The @newstatesman.bsky.social which, upholds the exclusionary anti-trans consensus in UK mainstream media is so afraid of disagreement it doesn’t allow trans people to publish at all. Complaining about this while trans people remain a proscribed group in the media is hypocrisy writ large.

BRITAIN IS AFRAID OF DISAGREEMENT
When was the last time you had a proper disagreement? And how did it make you feel afterwards? We're not talking about domestic arguments here, but debating the key political and social issues of our time. And according to new research by UCL and More In Common, shared exclusively with the New Statesman, it's getting harder to do.
As party conference season gets underway, a poll of 2,000 Brits found an esteem for the art of robust disagreement, with 63 per cent thinking it's important that any topic can be discussed, no matter how thorny. However, 58 per cent felt it was becoming harder to express disagreement, and 64 per cent noted political disagreements in Britain can easily become hostile or unpleasant, while 69 per cent admitted they were sometimes reluctant to share their views on contentious topics like immigration, gender identity and war in the Middle East. Only 6 per cent thought Britain actuallv disagrees well.

How is this working out for everyone, by the way? Surely fifteen years of standing behind the Tories, Farage, the Sun and the Mail while they demand our lunch money has done the trick, so there’s no need to keep saying “Yeah, do what he says” or “Do you want me to hold your jacket for you, Nige”.
