A piece of crop art that deserves more attention: Liberty Leading the People by Bethany Nagan, which earned a 3rd place ribbon. This is her first piece of crop art, and I think she used literally every seed in the catalog 😂. The parallels between this and the Guernica piece are beautiful.
Liberty Leading the People made of crop art. Liberty has been replaced with a loon, the French flag with Minnesota's flag, and the guns with resistance signs. It includes many other references and allusions to the resistance to ICE and Operation Metro Surge.Liberty Leading the People as shown in the Louvre.

Whew, one of the House Judiciary subcommittees is holding a hearing about court expansion today, and Rep. Hank Johnson (the subcommittee's highest ranking Democrat) delivered a sermon I just transcribed a paragraph that really resonated
screenshotted text reading as follows--

Rep. Hank Johnson: Abraham Lincoln once said “This government cannot endure half slave and half free.” Yet, that seems to be the vision for America that Chief Justice Roberts and the conservative supermajority of the Supreme Court envision. Where some enjoy easy access to the ballot, others are forced to overcome legal barriers designed to make our voices quieter. Our nation is now in Jim Crow 2.0. We are a nation where the right to vote once again can be diluted, restricted, or simply ignored, and where the voices of rich and powerful people carry more weight than the voices of ordinary Americans, but particularly Americans who look like me. Our 250-year experiment in self-governance can only succeed if Americans decide that the clock has run out on the far right’s attempt to overturn our democracy. So, we can either sit back as our Supreme Court continues to act without any restraint or checks and balances, or, we can do something about it. The American people deserve accountability for the damage that has been done. The American people deserve a judiciary that serves our democracy, not a narrow ideological agenda that only benefits the rich and powerful.

Teen suicide rates are down 11% since I helped create the national teen suicide hotline. Republicans are actively trying to defund it so they can pay for Trump's war in the Middle East. They don't care if kids die as a result as long as they get their oil.

the Black Panthers were right
IF YOU'RE UNEMPLOYED IT'S NOT BECAUSE THERE ISNT ANY WORK
JUST LOOK AROUND: A HOUSING SHORTAGE, CRIME, POLLUTION; WE NEED BETTER SCHOOLS AND PARKS.
WHATEVER OUR NEEDS, THEY ALL REQUIRE WORK.
AND AS LONG AS WE HAVE UNSATISFIED NEEDS, THERE'S WORK TO BE DONE.
SO ASK YOURSELE, WHAT KIND OF WORLD HAS WORK BUT NO JOBS. IT'S A WORLD WHERE WORK IS NOT RELATED TO SATISFYING OUR NEEDS, WORLD WHERE WORK IS ONLY RELATED TO SATISFYING THE PROFIT NEEDS OF BUSINESS.
THIS COUNTRY WAS NOT BUILT BY THE HUGE CORPORATIONS OR GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACIES.
IT WAS BUILT BY PEOPLE WHO WORK. AND, IT IS WORKING PEOPLE WHO SHOULD CONTROL THE WORK TO BE DONE. YET, AS LONG AS EMPLOYMENT IS TIED TO SOMEBODY ELSE'S PROFITS, THE WORK WONT GET DONE.

Carrie Fisher sits at a panel table speaking into a microphone, with a colorful “Indiana Comic” banner behind her. She wears dark-framed glasses and a black outfit, with her long blonde hair pulled back. Several drink cups, including two Diet Cokes and a red cup, are on the table in front of her. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Tribal Council unanimously approved a youth-led Rights of Nature resolution recognizing legal rights for Longperson (the waterways).
Cherokee, NC (January 8, 2026)- The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians(EBCI) Tribal Council
unanimously approved a youth-led Rights of Nature(RON) resolution recognizing legal rights for
Longperson (the waterways). Council members stood to vote and applaud the North American Indian
Women Association Daughters(ND) for their advocacy efforts. Longperson, the interconnected
waterway stretching over 790 miles, with its head in the mountains and its feet in the sea, was also
present, held in pottery by Beloved Women over a quarter-century old.
The Rights of the Longperson Resolution makes EBCI one of the first nations in North America to
legally recognize water as a living relative with the right to exist, flourish, regenerate, and flow freely.
This passage marked:
● The first all-female-led effort and second youth-led RON resolution in the United States
● The first waterways east of the Mississippi River and the second-longest waterways to
have its rights formally recognized
● An extraordinary show of public support, with council chambers overflowing into the lobby
and nearly 10,000 viewers watching online the day of the vote
The Cherokee have always understood Longperson is more than a river. Cherokee youth are raised in
a relationship with Longperson, knowing it nourishes and heals their communities and relies on the
Cherokee to steward it. Today, Longperson is facing mounting threats, including pollution, erosion,
development pressures, habitat loss, and climate change, underscoring the urgency of this resolution.
The resolution represents both a response and a restoration, reviving cultural law while bringing
Indigenous values into modern governance. Over the past 18 months, Cherokee youth gained RON
knowledge through national forums and collaborations. They sat with elders, cultural knowledge holders,
tribal leadership, and the community for research and education, all just to draft this legislation.
“I’m honored to have stood beside my ND siste…
