This US-funded study will assign some babies in a poor African country to get an effective hepatitis B vaccine, while WITHOLDING THE VACCINE from a control group. These babies are being treated as expendable test subjects in a study that could never get approval in the US. Fuck RFK Jr.

I didn't say that most non-experts confidently believe LLMs can't be conscious... I said that the most confident takes are coming from non-experts. Which in the context of a social media post is clearly shorthand for "the most confident takes that I personally am seeing".

Erin J. Wamsley 🧠📈😴 @wamsleylab.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Agree, but... It's better than not knowing much of anything about LLMs or the neuroscience of consciousness but still believing you have arrived at the one right opinion on this matter, based on vibes or whatever. Generally, the more people know the less confident they are, and that's appropriate.

Erin J. Wamsley 🧠📈😴 @wamsleylab.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Not really. Since I'm a cognitive neuroscientist, the people I hear from are not a random sample of the population. It's fairly rare for someone with expertise in neuroscience or consciousness to voice the kind of absolute 100% confidence on this that I see from commenters on threads like this.

Erin J. Wamsley 🧠📈😴 @wamsleylab.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
OK, you're am exception! :) But I notice you said you "think" they can never be conscious, not that they definitely 100% could never be conscious and that anyone who questions your position is a fool.
100
Erin J. Wamsley 🧠📈😴 @wamsleylab.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Good question. Here's another: Why do the most confident declarations that LLMs could never be conscious tend to come from persons who do not have expertise in either the neuroscience of consciousness or LLMs? (IMO, often this is an emotional reaction, not an intellectual position.)

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.

The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).
