seeing hacker news posts about margaret hamilton (rip), and forgive me, but i this is how it feels
wow cool robot meme, edited to show margaret hamilton standing next to a tower of code she hand audited, with an onlooker going "wow!! so much code!!!", and the point flying across the onlooker's head reads: engineering is about preventing problems through understanding the consequences of your decisions, both wanted and unwanted

I used to like browsing GitHub for cool stuff on the trending tab but now it's all just AI stuff. Is there something like a Forgejo instance with a trending tab where I can see cool stuff made by humans? Or a mailing list or community or something

sounds fun! my recent thoughts have been kinda the opposite: if i'd commit to shooting more film, i'd maybe like it to be on 120. not sure which direction to go with camera choice though - mamiya rb67, pentax 67, or something silly like intrepid 4x5 with a 120 back. well, it's good to have dreams!

they are so appealing as a concept! mechanical contraptions with classy design and a focus on the essentials. once every ~few years i start thinking about getting a leica, only to always eventually reach the same conclusion: in all likelihood, i wouldn't actually enjoy using a rangefinder

it's good to see this laid out clearly, but i'm once again going to point to Peter Naur's 1985 essay "Programming as Theory Building"
The present discussion is a contribution to the understanding of what programming is. It suggests that programming properly should be regarded as an activity by which the programmers form or achieve a certain kind of insight, a theory, of the matters at hand. This suggestion is in contrast to what appears to be a more common notion, that programming should be regarded as a production of a program and certain other texts.

I wanted to do a serious painting and record the whole drawing process, just to have an example for the youtube. It ended up taking over 10 hours, so I'll have to do multiple x16 speed edits to make it at all palatable to watch.
Digital painting of a light green path in a forest surrounded by trees on both sides. A creature with aspects of both an insect and a dinosaur is standing on a tree root in the upper left of the image, surrounded by a few smaller flying creatures. The image is painted in mostly warm tones, making it appear to take place in early morning.

Did you know you only need a small brain to make silly little drawings?
4 panel comic:
Panel 1: pink blob guy on a table, pencil in their hands. Grey circle on a piece of paper and a glass of water on the table. They say “look here”
Panel 2: Proudly, they hold up the drawing of a grey blobby character on two stick legs up in the air. The pink blob says “I drew this!”
Panel 3: Satisfied they sit back down on the table. They now go “it’s not much, but..” The grey drawing looks a bit peeved because the drawer is calling it “not much”
Panel 4: But it’s okay, because now the pink blob is very pleased finally. He says “it came from my brain!” Holding the pencil up. The grey drawing blob is happy again, too. End well, all well!

"I can't trust digital cameras to do exactly what I want" skill issue. Either put it in modes where it works the way you expect, or spend a little time sitting with the menu about how the different modes try to operate. They may be complex, but they're not possessed. They do what they're set to.

Cohost users have seen some shit. (Now I must log off, good night)
Cohost user Phorm, Verified Vixdjinn posts an iconic movie still from Bladerunner's "Tears in the Rain" monologue, but writes "I've seen social media you people wouldn't believe. Livejournal collapsing in on itself after Russian acquisition. Tumblr self-detonating to appease credit card processors. I watched Twitter smolder in self-immolation at the hands of an incurious manchild. All those posts will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to log off."

The witch made him hot chocolate. "They say I'm strong," he said. "And I am." He took a sip. "They say I can overcome any hardship." "Mm," said the witch. "And I can. I do." The witch said nothing. "But I shouldn't have to!" "No." The witch held the hero as he wept. "No, you shouldn't."

People, young and old, came to the witch for directions. "I seek adventure." "I seek wisdom." "I need a place to feel at home." "I feel like I need to cry, but I can't." The witch listened, and told all where to find what they sought. And the local library thrived. #CrossRepost

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

OH. right! i get it now!

i get why AI is so depressing to me. because covid already shrunk my world to almost nothing, where almost all of my life revolves around socializing and watching videos on the internet (which is being ruined by AI) and creating creative works through coding (which is being ruined by AI), often using open source tools and libraries (which are being ruined by AI)

i already had so little and now even that is being rotted away before my eyes
