Telling that Wes Streeting considers someone diagnosed with ADHD has been 'written off'. Also telling that the government commissioned a review in the face of independent reviews finding there is no overdiagnosis, just increased awareness & historic underdiagnosis of girls & women.

This is the political economic trade-off in our space: politics (time devoted to critiquing AI, developing policies for handling it) vs. pleasure (reading and teaching literature). And that’s what AI, along with every other bureaucratic incursion, ends up taking away from us. eve.gd/2026/10/05/m...

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

Bemused by the Vinted seller who insists they put up the curtains they sold me direct from packaging, when they are much shorter than the label implies. How do you forget you had your curtains shortened? Or indeed not look at a pair of 1.3m curtains and think "huh, these don't look over 2m long..."

the whole point of LLMs is to add another layer of separation between the people doing the social harms and the harms themselves like hiring a consultant, the point is for it to do what you always wanted while you go "haha that thing has a mind of its own"

One student, reacting to this news about AI, echoed the same terms as a senior colleague: “either there’s an honor code or there isn’t.” Just as AI blurs the lines between fact & slop, for too many students it’s bringing unnecessary confusion to that critical question.

I think there are a lot of teachers like me at every level exhausted by asking students to do the work themselves even as they see authority figures employing AI. But I know we’re not half as frustrated as the students coming of age, trying to figure out what’s right & what’s wrong.

The reason that the ‘what works’ reform toolkit is like maybe five things that both actually work and scale is that teaching kids is actually very hard. The solutions are also extremely unsexy, mostly help kids at the margins, and aren’t particularly flattering to anyone.

But if you’re in the field you’re in the ‘most effecient way to teach fractions business’, not the ‘fix all of society’ business. You gotta focus on the problem that’s actually tractable and within the scope of what you can a-dress.

I do sort of get why a lot of education PhDs go a little insane because one thing that working in a high need school will make extremely clear to you is that school is a permeable part of society and new way of teaching fractions won’t fix a kid not having a bed to sleep on.

Look, let's clear this up. LLMs can't think or understand because those are evolved capabilities of embodied living organisms embedded in the physical and social world and LLMs aren't that. Don't make it harder than it is.

I'm working on an extremely armchair hypothesis based on chats with some colleagues and students and it is roughly that students hate AI and don't want it in their lives but have been told by universities that they need to use it because employers told universities they need to use it

Are these the same UK Higher Education providers who have all uncritically subscribed to LLM platforms like ChatGPT Edu? Who continually recontract with the same proprietary software providers like Ex Libris Group for library systems?
The report findings reveal that on a scale of one to five, where one demonstrates institutions are at a reactive stage of digital maturity and five an integrated stage, the aggregated sector score was 2.84. This indicates that, on average, UK higher education providers have moved beyond reactive investment in digital infrastructure and are embedding more strategic approaches and proactive practices.

The results also show:

Reliable, safe and secure digital infrastructure is the highest-rated aspect of the assessment
Digital capability, including AI capability, has the lowest maturity ratings
Funding or investment is the most frequently cited single barrier to further progress, followed by staff capacity and time

We moved quickly in the G20 and smaller groups to deliver an urgent, practical response.
We came together to agree principles - which everyone implemented at home in a way that was right for them. And it worked.
That is the kind of approach we need now.
