It's a similar thing to inventing increasingly convoluted hypotheticals to justify using a slur. Like, why do you want to say that word so badly?

what I hope this thread makes clear is two things: 1. expanding the court has real problems, and these are valid concerns 2. there are no good options left, and this is the best of the bad ones unless we want to accept a conservative supermajority for the rest of our lives

I know normies don't understand why advocates get so fired up about this kind of safe streets messaging. It's because we see what's happening in places like Toronto, where the government is literally stripping away life-saving infrastructure. Where the signal being sent is: Your lives don't matter.

i treat people who were gamergaters in the early days but now no longer the same way i will treat ex-Trump supporters. like yeah, you might have been young or naive and i'm glad you're out of that realm now. but there was never anything redeemable there at the core, and you need to understand that.

This is why ppl get angry when "moderate" dems say they won't impeach this motherfucker again. If his actively flouting the tripartite system that's literally intended to keep him in check does not rise to the level of "Blatant Constitutional Crisis Requiring Extraordinary Measures" then what does?

There’s some quote, I think from Seth Rogan, that says that it’s fine to cross lines in comedy but people want to understand that you’re aware a line exists and have an awareness and deliberateness to it, and I think that’s the reason people like Mel Brooks are so funny and dipshit stand ups aren’t

Far from its worst sin, but in The Bride!, a character says something like "Maybe The Bride will inspire women to become doctors or astronauts." The movie is set in 1936. Also, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to go to space in 1963, just two years after Yuri Gagarin.

If you understand that political antisemitism was not just the hatred of the Jew qua Jew, but an entire worldview in which the Jew stands in for border-crossing cosmopolitan ideologies that threaten the nation-state, then you understand why the Israeli right had to reinvent it from first principles.
"The anti-Israel documentary NAZA won a prize at Venice and made international headlines.

But behind the film is a network of newsrooms, nonprofits and activists that received millions from the Soros family's Open Society Foundations"

"these researchers published a paper on something that literally any of us could have told you 🙄" ok well my supervisors wont let me write something in my thesis unless I can back it up with a citation so maybe it's a good thing that they're amplifying your voice to the scientific community in a way that prevents people from writing off your experiences as annecdotal evidence
they did the research in the first place because they believed you and wanted to tell people about it. they are not our enemies.

reblog by aphony-cree

people always go "Instead of spending all that time on a study they could have just listened to us when we said these thing happen"

they did listen, that's how studies work, they asked people about their experiences and put all the data together in a nice package that can be cited

I mean, no, the reason cops are disproportionately likely to say they believe rates of false allegations are higher than they are is because cops are disproportionately likely to do things that would make them the subject of allegations that are true
Most criminal justice experts estimate that 2 to 8 percent of sexual assault allegations are actually false. But law enforcement officers tend to assume the rate of false reporting is much higher—in part because police officers don't always receive training on how trauma can affect memory or behavior.
