It is slightly bad luck for Reform that Suella Braverman has taken a core Restore argument + vocally championed it, allowing Kemi Badenoch to attach Reform to it Braverman doesn't identify as English - but almost no English-identifying [white] MP would reject Rashford or Ian Wright as English
This inclusive nativism – that being born and bred in England does count, regardless of skin colour or faith, if you identify as English – is entirely missed by Suella Braverman, who writes dismissively about “a plane ticket and a birth certificate” as if they are the same thing. “How many generations must pass before one can claim to be English? Five? Six? It is a question without an easy answer”, she writes in in her Telegraph commentary piece. The only charitable thing to do with this thought would be to assume that no thought has gone into it whatsoever.

Thoughtlessness could prove an important defence for Braverman. It seems deeply unlikely that she would defend the outcomes that her piece logically entails – when applying it to the specific cases of those who identify as English, without five or six generations of English ancestry. But she would surely lose the Conservative whip were she willing to do that – since it would involve rejecting the English identity – on racial grounds – of many people accepted as English by just about everybody who is not a vocal and overt racist.

Braveman has over a hundred Conservative parliamentary colleagues who do identify as English. If she sense-checked her theory with them, she would find it unlikely that any would declare that Marcus Rashford and Jude Bellingham are too black to be English – nor that Moeen Ali’s declaration of his pride in being English should be rejected on the grounds of his visibly Muslim beard and Pakistani heritage. It may seem even more baffling that the ‘Braverman rules’ would reject Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney as too Irish to be English too.

Sporting symbolism has undoubtedly entrenched this common-sense consensus that English national identity has been multi-ethnic since the 1990s. That is one of the reasons why Asian English identity is less intuitively familiar than that of the black English, with little presence in football in particular. But this is not just a question of sport. Braverm…

Herbert Morrison, for Labour, told MPs that this was "not the Bill of a political party". It was "responding to the demand of everything that is decent, everything that is good, everything that is fine in British public opinion." He then warned of the dangers of uniforms and of foreign funding.
The uniform in politics is an attempt to evolve a new authority, a rival authority to the authority of the State, the authority of the civilian police and the authority of local government. Secondly, it is a uniform that marches en masse, in military formation, with military precision, subject to military orders.
Nor can we ignore what has happened in this connection in foreign countries. It is significant to note that the technique which is being followed by this organisation more and more resembles the technique of the Nazis in Germany. If some of us are suspicious that the money which is necessary to buy that technique and its application in Great Britain may come from German sources, is that an unreasonable suspicion? I think it is probable that it does.

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.
