My goodness, some of the the reply guy rot you encounter, some of the egregiously stupid things people want to say as a response to a clear work of fiction... People offering nothing but a reminder that pisspuffins whirl everywhere. I see I'm going to have to do a lot of banishing this October.

Not to piss on anyone’s chips, but Hookland won’t be doing any ‘31 days of spookiness’ malarkey. Halloween is not that big a thing in a county that does hauntings in a matchbox every day of the year. The gothic is not tinsel on this ghost soil, it’s a bone tattoo.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Friends, I have a new translation coming out in 2027 from El Martillo Press and let’s just say it’s a 180 from my St. Teresa book.💙📚
Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582), painted by Rubens. Teresa wears the brown and white nun’s habit of her Carmelite Order. She writes with a quill in a bound notebook, as befits one of the great stylists and literary genre-busters in history. I translated Teresa’s poetry and wrote essays about her in my book, Sweet Hunter, published by Monkfish in 2024. https://indiepubs.com/products/sweet-hunter-9781958972496Black, red, and white abstract image for Speculari, a recording of sound poetry by contemporary Mexican poet Rocío Cerón. The sound album became Cerón’s book, Áurica Speculari, which I have translated from Spanish to English. Forthcoming in 2027 from El Martillo Press.

The Pope reminds me of a version of Catholicism I knew growing up as a young man attending anti-war and anti-death penalty protests, where I met elderly Catholics who shared their version of faith with me. I learned that Catholicism was about love and mercy for the weak, the condemned, and the poor.

Two thing can be true. The WH kicking out media it doesn’t like is absolutely a First Amendment violation. And There is little journalism of value to be found in the highly controlled, substance-free halls of power—wall-to-wall navel-gazing about one’s access probably being of the least value.

There's news about people "being removed from Affordable Care Act coverage." Reporters often get this wrong. ACA health plans are PRIVATE coverage via insurers like Aetna. The US gov't can't remove you from private coverage. They can only remove any federal subsidies you may get to offset the cost.

Years ago, every major news outlet could have nixed the incessant coverage of the shiny orange object now in the White House. But no—they have covered him 24/7, every sneeze and snore. They made the monster. If some outlets losing W.H. access means less overall coverage of the guy, that's good.

Human geography. Daily life in Cabo de la Vela. The strict geometry of the fence and vibrant garments contrasts with the vast aridity of the desert. #luiscordobapharchive #guajira #cabodelavela #colombia #desierto #documentary #portrait #scape #landscape
documentary photograph capturing daily life in the arid landscape of Cabo de la Vela, La Guajira, Colombia. A long barbed-wire fence with concrete posts runs horizontally across a dry, rocky clay hill, splitting the frame. A series of brightly colored garments and textiles hang from the wire, catching the strong desert wind. To the right, a person in a traditional long, patterned orange tunic (manta guajira) and a cap walks parallel to the fence line. The upper half of the image consists of a vast, clear, pale blue sky. The composition relies on strong linear perspective, stark tonal contrast between the desert floor and the clothing, and deep focus. Optimized for La Guajira documentary photography, Wayuu culture, desert human geography, and Colombian cultural landscapes
