Statement of teaching philosophy
Here are some things three separate students have shared with me this week (and it's only Tuesday):

-That they had a brain tumor the size of a plum removed last summer
-That a close friend killed themselves right in front of them
-That they have cancer

I listen and look them in the eye and do my best to acknowledge the enormity of their hurt and confusion.

To the know-it-alls who like to blather on about soft humanities courses with no "real world" application...well, it doesn't get much more real than this. I'm going to teach these folks how to tell their stories. How to own them. And I will do it by making a space for them to speak their truths. In the kind of world I want to live in, everyone gets a chance to do that.

Tonight I was remembering an incredible essay I’d first read in a Pushcart anthology 30 years ago. It was called “Stillborn” by Maribeth Fischer. So I looked her up online and sent her a note of appreciation. It felt great to do. Highly recommend.

I like those little moths in the grass that flutter up when you shuffle through the yard after dark. What are they doing? Who knows. Something. Nothing. They are white & fluttery & mindless in a way I (forever anxious) envy. What are they doing?! Little ghosts! It doesn’t matter…& of course it does.

A colourful river braid on a black sand beach with some tufts of grass on sand dunes just visible. There is a grey sea on the right, some brightness in the sky above some islands, miles in the distance. The river is yellow, orange, turquoise and is shaped a little like a mermaid with her hear and arm thrown back...

A less-talked-about pleasure of getting older: the chance to rediscover via memory & imagination the old people of my youth. What new appreciation for them I discover! The hurts they must have hurt, physically & spiritually, & how understanding of that amplifies the gift of their love.

21 days to The Sea-Glass Shore launch! So glad for these words from @jamieboyd.bsky.social, whose storytelling in "The Wilding Year" plays in such a believable and hopeful way with the bizarre and ordinary unpredictability of the human body. strangehorizons.com/wordpress/fi...
Illustration of a woman on a rock by the sea from the cover of The Sea-Glass Shore, with text reading "Julie Salmon Kelleher's prose sings, sometimes like a lullaby and sometimes like a siren's call, always poignant but alternating between notes of time-worn wisdom, quiet humor, painful longing, and stubborn hope." --Jamie M.
