Far too many people simply hate children for existing

Neighbor blasts an ultrasonic device audible and painful only to children whenever they pass on the public sidewalk.

Was riding bikes with my daughter and a friend to school this morning. We passed a house and they both started yelling, "Ow! It hurts my ears." Really strange, right? Then I hear a voice play through a speaker who says, "If it hurts your ears, ride your bikes somewhere else!"

Now I'm angry. Literally doing nothing but riding bikes to school, probably one of the most wholesome activities a person could imagine, and...I can't even get my brain around it.

It's apparently not loud, but it is tuned to a frequency higher than I can hear. If it's low enough for my children to hear it, it's going to be almost useless as an animal deterrent. It is specifically designed to cause pain to humans and serves no other purpose.

How is this legal?

One of the things to come from GamerGate was the gamification of torturing real, live women...hounding them out of their homes, making them look over their shoulders for years. US policymakers must avoid the temptation to rebuild US science by mimicking China and going all in on STEM. That would be a mistake. We also need social science and humanities that makes sense of great technological change like AI. Thats part of US scientific tradition worth keeping.

For example, Henry Farrell argues that the social sciences arose from and are designed to make sense of moments of great social upheaval, which is exactly the moment AI is creating right now. Focusing only on investing in AI technology, without understanding the deeper implications of the changes it brings, would be a deep failure of science.

Farrell quotes Alondra Nelson, who has been thinking carefully about the impacts of AI for years:

AI is not an external force acting upon society from outside but an internal phenomenon constituted through social processes, institutional choices, market dynamics, and political struggles. Its effects are neither uniform nor preordained. They vary with context, design, and the distribution of power that determines how these technologies are built, deployed, and contested.

Thinking about how my GP, who specializes in family medicine, didn’t know measles infection causes immune amnesia (your body forgets all of its immunities and you have to start all over rebuilding them) and how dangerous, and likely common, that lack of medical knowledge is in our current climate.
