Israel facing water shortages caused by destruction of Gaza’s treatment plants
Five desalination plants shut down for days, while Gaza remains in grip of severe water and sanitation crisis Israel is facing weeks of water shortages after an exceptional algae bloom crippled much of its desalination capacity, in a crisis scientists say was triggered when Israeli attacks destroyed much of Gaza’s wastewater infrastructure, causing a massive discharge of untreated sewage. “Pollution does not recognise political borders,” said the Zalul Environmental Association, an Israeli NGO dedicated to protecting the country’s seas and shores. “The discharge of untreated sewage from the Gaza Strip into the sea is contributing to the worsening crisis affecting the Israeli desalination facilities. The wastewater contains nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which feed microalgae and cyanobacteria and may intensify their blooms.” Continue reading...

I certainly raised a few eyebrows last week when I walked into the press pack with my biggest adversary, Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson, to stand on a unity ticket asking the Prime Minister to properly resource our parliamentary offices. By fixating on immigration numbers, are our leaders missing the bigger picture for working Australians?
It can be tempting to blame grievance politics or the rise of One Nation for the tenor of current debate, but these are symptoms of a deeper malaise When the immigration minister, Tony Burke, approached the National Press Club podium on Thursday, the eyes of every migrant in the country would have been fixed on him. But, in fact, Burke’s address was a message for all working people across the country – and a signal of the times ahead for all of us. The past 12 months have seen all sides of politics cohere around the consensus articulated in the introduction to Burke’s address by the press club’s president, Tom Connell: “there is furious agreement over a need for a cut to immigration.” The only difference across the political spectrum is in the detail: who deserves to be cut, and who is valuable or otherwise deserving enough to remain. A scientific sentiment analysis chart mapping Australian uses of the word 'cunt' across valence (positive to negative) and intensity axes. The diagram plots 16 variations including 'sick cunt', 'mad cunt', (very positive, high intensity) 'hard cunt', 'top cunt' and 'lucky cunt' (positive, high intensity), 'good cunt', 'clever cunt', 'funny cunt' (positive, lower intensity), 'soft cunt', 'lazy cunt', 'dumb cunt' (slightly negative, low intensity), 'dodgy cunt, gronk cunt, shit cunt and dead cunt', (negative, high intensity) and 'dog cunt' (very negative, high intensity). The neutral form 'CUNT' sits at the origin.
