I’ve been thinking about what to write about this award and I rarely post. But when I found out I got it, only one thought came to mind. I am the first person in my family that ever entered university. And, naturally, the first to discover what a PhD even is. My #firstgen thread 🔽

Immunology as a guide to human relationships
This essay uses immunology to illuminate human relationships. Moving beyond self/non-self toward danger-based models, it draws parallels between cytokine communication and language, tolerance and forgiveness, microbiota diversity and coexistence. Recognizing these metaphors reveals pathways toward healthier connections within individuals, communities, and societies.

Kupffer cells facilitate intrahepatic CD4 T cell help
Intrahepatic immune responses are often insufficient to control hepatitis virus infections. A recent study by Venzin and colleagues demonstrates a detailed mechanism by which an intrahepatic tricellular network and the cytokine IL-27 can augment virus-specific immunity.

Naturalized immune responses are stable over years in a colony of laboratory mice with wild-derived microbiota
The transfer of microbiota and pathogens from wild mice to genetically tractable laboratory mice has been shown to enhance modeling of human immune responses in preclinical studies. However, the long-term stability of the transferred complex microbiota and the induced immune phenotype in a standard laboratory mouse colony are not known. Oh et al. demonstrate that microbiota from wild mice maintain their composition and biodiversity over multiple years in a laboratory mouse colony, with increased myeloid cell numbers and immune cell function across organs. This phenotype can be transferred to adult lab mice, creating a sharable resource for preclinical research.

For me, the most inspiring part was seeing how many women are now leading the field of cancer research. I’ve attended conferences before, but this time, it felt different; there was a strong presence of women not just as attendees, but as keynote speakers, session chairs, and award recipients. It made me pause and realize how much the landscape is changing. As a young woman in science, it felt both empowering and motivating. It reminded me that we’re not just contributing, we’re also shaping the future of this field in a real and visible way.
