When I said the inverse was happening I don’t mean I know someone who is being turned pro-Fox News because of chatbots, I mean I know someone who’s turning pro-chatbot because of Fox News rather than anti-Fox News because they’re *so* pro-chatbot.

I think you’re underrating the possibility that Americans dumb enough to be pro-Trump are also dumb enough to fall for it if someone moans about this vote being “illegitimate” but never does anything to make that matter

Right, and also “you should believe whatever ChatGPT says” may be a trick that works for as long as ChatGPT tells the truth but it’s not really a good way of thinking about the world and Sam Altman can make it be FoxGPT whenever he wants.

For every person who asks ChatGPT whether vaccines work, gets told yes, and believes it because of the “AI is always correct” mind virus, there’s going to be a person who develops suspicion of vaccines because “big pharma” is using Claude.

Maybe. The most propagandized person in my life has had the opposite reaction—they went from a lifelong tech hater freaked out about AI and data centers to being a booster who believes they’re “curing cancer” after 2 weeks of Fox News saying so.

Probably the worst crime of the AI industry to date is making Mark Zuckerberg somehow, against all odds, appear to be the most sane and human-seeming rich person in Silicon Valley.

Also, a thought I had, possibly insane and conspiratorial, while reading this is that it’s very interesting that SBF (1) started a company that made him a lot of money by increasing the demand for GPUs right after GPT-1 was built and (2) then gave all the money he stole to Anthropic

My intuition is that LLMs are going to probably get better at producing logic but are not going to prove to be well-suited to judgment and/or creativity. This seems like where the case the pro-LLM people make is weakest too basically “well, we think it will materialize if there’s more data.”

I might just be Bluesky-poisoned but at any rate I need better discourse. I need there to be a group blog about why “scaling laws” are bullshit, no more “Ed Zitron read a spreadsheet and he says it’s going to go away in two months”

There needs to be some kind of reckoning with the fact that the people who have been most outspokenly critical of this shit have been completely wrong at every turn about its capabilities and economics (though definitely not about some of the harms).

I don’t mean by this that there is no good reason to be doubtful of these machines but that it no longer feels like there is any meaningful number of people who doubt them and also can see how good they are at certain things. It’s all Ed Zitron BS that has turned out to be straightforwardly false.

I’ve been feeling more unsettled than ever about AI this week and the reason I think (besides the drama, obv) is, on the one hand, I don’t really think LLMs are going to turn out to be *that much* more capable, but also the AI-critical community is now seemingly in permanent la la land.

I’m going to start developing an argument that Dario Amodei is the only tech CEO who hates Trump because he has a STEM degree unlike the inherently fascist liberal arts (computer science) degree holders who run everything else.

It’s done in a very Apple way where I don’t think there’s any risk at all that Apple or the government can access your conversations and they aren’t even meaningfully “recording” anything (arguably) but (a) people are paranoid and (b) even the summaries of conversations are pretty icky

It’s on the new one only, but the problem is not the feature, which is entirely secure and surveillance free (and can be turned off), but the obvious social stigma that will attach to it.
