Honestly the "Canada should join the EU" thing was good fun as far as thought experiments go (I wrote that column in January 2025). But anyone who thinks something much more meaningful than what already exists can be forged is, I think, getting spun very hard by some savvy political machines.

As expected, the Lake Ontario change is rolling out in the wake of GNIS updates. Bleah. Sure, “companies should simply refuse”, or “USGS employees should resign en masse”, or blah blah blah but the root cause is that the US was dumb enough to re-elect Trump and here’s another stupid consequence.
The U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has formally changed the name for "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" in the United States.
Since we update Google Maps to reflect name changes in official government sources, which is GNIS for the U.S., people using Maps in the U.S. will see "Lake America," those in Canada will continue to see "Lake Ontario," and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names. These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out

a six foot tall woman can do whatever she wants forever honestly
A strange wall of blue and white text outside the bathroom at the Chesapeake house rest stop on i95. The largest part of the text reads “A SIX-FOOT TALL WOMAN” in massive letters, which naturally titillates my attention. The full text reads “The Chesapeake Bay is surprisingly shallow. A SIX FOOT TALL WOMAN (in all caps) can wade through over 700,000 acres of the Bay without wetting her hat.” There are also a bunch of other random bay-relatedwords collaged in all directions around the edge of it, saying things like “ecosystem, fresh, ocean, shallow, fascinating, Susquehanna, terrapin, fun” etc. If you’re gonna make the centerpiece of the work massive text that says “A SIX FOOT TALL WOMAN” maybe you should also include some words in the collage like “#FEMINISM” and “LESBIAN LUST”.

In the 1970s, a group of farmers digging a well stumbled upon one of the greatest archaeological finds in history. They had found the terracotta army—some 8,000 life-size clay soldiers, buried over 2,000 years ago. The soldiers had real weapons, **which were still sharp**. How? 1/8 ⚛️🧪

The famous Hindsgavl Dagger, found by a young boy out walking with his mum on the Danish island of Fænø! A masterpiece of flint knapping from Late Neolithic Denmark, c. 1900-1700 BC. 📷 National Museum of Denmark #FindsFriday #Archaeology
A photo of the so-called Hindsgavl Dagger by Arnold Mikkelsen for the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. It is knapped from flint which appears a burnt orange colour in the photo, displayed against a black background. The Hindsgavl Dagger is a type of late Neolithic flint blade known as a ‘fishtail’ dagger. It has a leaf-shaped body and a distinctive fishtail-shaped hilt. There is zig-zag knapping on the hilt which is said to mimic the stitched seam on leather handles of bronze daggers. The blade is less than 1 cm thick. The Hindsgavl Dagger is famous in Denmark and features on the Danish 100 Krone bank note. Dimensions: 29.5 cm in length.

TIL mysterious atmospheric seed crystals that disrupt existing chemical production facilities by spontaneously making it impossible to manufacture a certain form of a drug and that being a factor in subsequent IP battles in pharma manufacturing is a thing
Form II was of sufficiently lower energy that it became impossible to produce Form I in any laboratory where Form II was introduced, even indirectly. Scientists who had been exposed to Form II in the past seemingly contaminated entire manufacturing plants by their presence, probably because they carried over microscopic seed crystals of the new polymorph.[3] The drug was temporarily

A lifelike bronze worker ant standing on a wooden tabletop. Nine progress photographs along the way to making the bronze ant's head. Digital sculpting in Blender, 3D printing in gray resin for fit/feel testing, 3D printing in castable resin, just after casting still covered with investment (plaster), raw metal still attached to the casting tree, three levels of cleanup, and a finished (but unpatinated) head in my hand.Mid assembly of the bronze ant, testing fit. The ant is laying on its back on a cutting mat, four legs assembled and the abdomen detached, with a pair of pliers and a stray bolt nearby.
