This actually feels like an extremely actionable finding for MLS clubs who have pitches that look extremely like the left ones for most of the season. Removing morning dew saves your pitch, who knew!

I think AI has many useful applications. I think AI boosters are responsible for destroying their own product's public image by trying to shove it down the throats of people who don't want it.

No, your new computer software, while more advanced than any previous software, is not going to transform the physical architecture of the polar ice caps in the next five years then sneak bioweapons into cities. That won’t happen, and it would be very stupid for us to reorient life now around it.

Have to reshare this every time I see it. Raymond Chandler mocking science fiction in 1953 and sounding cool as hell. He should have written some space stories.
Did you ever read what they call Science Fiction? It’s a scream. It is written like this:

“I checked out with K19 on Aldabaran III, and stepped out through the crummalite hatch on my 22 Model Sirus Hardtop. I cocked the timejector in secondary and waded through the bright blue manda grass. My breath froze into pink pretzels. I flicked on the heat bars and the Brylls ran swiftly on five legs using their other two to send out crylon vibrations. The pressure was almost unbearable, but I caught the range on my wrist computer through the transparent cysicites. I pressed the trigger. The thin violet glow was icecold against the rust-colored mountains. The Brylls shrank to half an inch long and I worked fast stepping on them with the poltex. But it wasn’t enough. The sudden brightness swung me around and the Fourth Moon had already risen. I had exactly four seconds to hot up the disintegrator and Google⁵ had told me it wasn’t enough. He was right.”

They pay brisk money for this crap?

Maneuver warfare is great! It's just not magic and paralysis is horseshit! The Reformers' maneuverist psychological paralysis was, at best, an ambitious, risky, and unmeasurable goal which a non-deferential author might call a suicidal delusion. Worse, it ossified into some real dumb ideas.

No the problem is you absolutely will not mass ground elements. And since all ground warfare doctrine is built on massing ground elements, that is the actual problem: how to fight without mass.

I’m not sure why these data guys are convinced it’s possible to appeal to a supermajority coalition by triangulating on policy, when data shows voters do not vote on anything close to a rational basis. People who vote Republican do so because they see it as part of their identity.

tpwrtrmnky on tumblr: "Guy who has a non-research degree in a field that never studies human subjects: Here are my opinions on what needs to be done for me to respect this field I've decided to become a denier of.

• [Extreme breach of scientific ethics]
• [Violent abuse of power]
• [Method that actually doesn't obtain any information]
• [Controlled double-blind studies of phenomena where that is literally impossible]
• [Seeking empirical proof that a word has the meaning that it's defined as]
• [Study that would have a dropoff rate of 100%]

Additionally, how do we know that [best currently available theory] is true, and not [dominant theory from 100 years ago that repeatedly failed in the face of evidence]? I have found some minor methodological flaws in [studies that were not designed to prove the best available theory, but rather examine edge cases within that theory], so we should really consider [nonsense with no evidence backing it whatsoever]."
