from 2001. no one’s doing product testimonials like this anymore. t.co/PEswCtbEZz
Toyota's unease at being associated with the Taliban and Al Qaeda is evident. In its September statement, the company said,
'Toyota does not have a sales or distribution channel in Afghanistan, and we do not export vehicles to that country."
Somewhat less laconic was Wade Hoyt, Toyota's spokesman in New York, who put the best corporate spin on the situation this week.
"It is not our proudest product placement," he said. "But it shows that the Taliban are looking for the same qualities as any truck buyer: durability and reliability."

For the record, if you think it's cool to have a slur for "people who aren't from here", you're being an asshole. And if you try to justify it by essentially saying "no, it's only the ones I don't like", congratulations, you're still being an asshole.

I think a big theory of Why We Are Where We Are Now is that a lot of people have lost the ability to distinguish between things that are crimes and things that personally annoy them.

As someone who lived in NYC on 9/11 I just have to say this idea of a "post-9/11 unity" is insane to me. It did not feel like a country that had *always* despised its largest city was "uniting" with us in our trauma. It felt like a nation of vultures descending on a carcass.

adults have great power over children, including power to speak for them and over them, and they use that power to silence children, pass policies that harm children, and then say they're working for children.

unfortunately, I read a children's book of mnemonics for the state capitals and thus, to me, New Hampshire is a nude hamster riding a Concorde
the book is called "Yo! Sacramento" and also has a presidential companion called "Yo! Millard Fillmore"

did I mention the nude hamster is very large?

NYC’s suburbs (esp Long Island) are a paranoid, reactionary drag on the city, region, state, & entire country and more NY Dems should be explicitly advancing an agenda to dilute their political power by building housing near transit. I want to see 40-story towers all the way out to Hicksville.

I love re-upping this: for decades the main library at UCLA had the generic name University Research Library because the person most responsible for getting it built was an English professor named Hugh G. Dick and the university refused to name it after him.

the trans moral panic pushed by the NYT and Atlantic is about transphobia, obviously, but it's also about older wealthy readers believing that as adults they have the right to control their children's identities and futures.

young people really are in many ways an oppressed group and that experience of oppression often leads them to identify with other oppressed people.

It's often presented as a joke but "I'm not rich, my parents are" is just the reality, and rich parents have an absurd amount of control over their children, sometimes into young adulthood

fwiw, one reason young people are more attracted to egalitarian philosophies is that no young person is actually rich. children don't own any property in their own name. this is not just a tecnicality; it's a material reality that has realy material consequences. 1
