If you ever wondered why visible light is those particular wavelengths, it's because life evolved to see in the narrow range where water is transparent

Sharp-wave ripples are not isolated hippocampal events. They are embedded in nested, brain-wide rhythms and coincide with visual-cortical synchronization at about 5 Hz. doi.org/10.64898/202... #neuroscience

Awake sharp-wave ripples coincide with rhythmic cortical synchronization
Analysis of the Allen Institute Visual Coding Neuropixels dataset revealed a ~5 Hz synchronization of visual cortical activity in awake, immobile mice. During bouts of this rhythm, synchronized cortical bursts coincided with changes in the occurrence of sharp-wave ripples (SWRs) and dentate spikes and in SWR properties. Cortical synchronization, SWRs, and dentate spikes were also coordinated with slower pupil-size fluctuation, revealing that awake SWRs are embedded within nested brainwide rhythms. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. The superposition of these two studies — both incredible — reflect a snapshot of "one big thing" systems neuroscience has yet to resolve. In mice: 1. Task-related signals are everywhere. 2. Absent large swaths of "everywhere," suprisingly sophisticated learning & behavior remains.

Why do some beliefs, like the belief in a false leader, seem to be self-perpetuating? Maybe it’s the pain of admitting you were wrong. Maybe it’s that following such a leader involves giving oneself over to the leader’s judgment, suspending our own in favor of theirs. So they are always right.
