Our multiverse analysis of associations between skin conductance and acute pain is published! >550 participants x 18 SCR pipelines = 1 winning approach to SCR analysis! (Ledalab + artifact detection). thread below. We hope others find this useful! Please RT :) journals.lww.com/pain/fulltex...

@alexanderhuth.bsky.social already suggested here on bsky that the reported findings can arise from noise alone. Simulations with 100% matched BOLD/metabolism signals reproduced their results. This motivated us to examine their publicly shared data & code. 👇 4/11

However, conclusions by Epp et al. go far beyond, claiming that ~40% of reported BOLD findings could be misinterpreted, broadly questioning >30 years of fMRI research (see their press release: shorturl.at/4FAMw). But does the data really support this? 👇 3/11

Epp et al. use quantitative fMRI to test whether + and - BOLD signals are concordant in sign with underlying metabolism. That this relationship is complex is long known and has been extensively studied, already shaping how fMRI findings are interpreted. (see www.nature.com/articles/s41...). 👇 2/11

A recent paper by Epp et al. in NN claimed that ~40% of reported BOLD findings could be misinterpreted. In our reanalysis, we identified several statistical issues that, in our view, undermine these conclusions. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... 👇 1/11

1/6 Our paper is out today in Nature Communications! From the SFB/TRR 289 Treatment Expectation @sfb-trr-289.bsky.social we show that temporal expectations shape somatosensory perception - for both painful heat AND non-painful cold stimuli.

Howard Fields was a great scientist and one of the pioneers unravelling the descending pain modulatory system. He was also interacting with human pain scientists and I vividly remember my visits to UCSF in 2013 during my sabbatical at Stanford to discuss ideas with him. He will be dearly missed.

This is the May cover of NN but it has already been debunked on biorxiv www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Such a clear statement about the ridiculous pace of publishing (not just NN).

It is with profound sadness that we share that Professor Andrea Evers passed away. Andrea was a visionary leader, a brilliant scientist, and a compassionate colleague. As we begin to process this immense loss, let us remember Andrea for her remarkable legacy and kindness she brought into our lives.

🚨 Fresh preprint w/ @helenblank.bsky.social! How does the brain acquire expectations about a conversational partner, and how are priors integrated w/ sensory inputs? Current evidence diverges. Is it prediction error? Sharpening? Spoiler: It's both.👀 🧵1/16 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Any time a paper reports an AUC of 1.0 on test data, my hackles are raised. This commentary by @olegolt.bsky.social @tspisak.bsky.social @christianbuchel.bsky.social nicely dissects problems with a recently reported "biomarker" for pain.

Very sad news! She was my dear desk neighbor at UCL for many years. She made outstanding contributions to the science of learning and memory, and the fact that one of her PhD students was awarded a Nobel Prize in 2024 further highlights her exceptional abilities as a mentor in the field of science.

Check out our new review on "How control modulates pain" doi.org/10.1016/j.ti.... We have not only summarized many studies in this field, but also suggest that in the context of a Bayesian pain model, control might be mediated by changes in expectation.
