So we are warring with Iran And Russia is supplying weaponry to Iran. And we are paying Russia to send us diesel fuel. Because we are warring with Iran the ships with the diesel can't get to us. So we are buying it from Russia, which... Yeah, this is some three-dimensional chess right here.

This is one reason why you shouldn’t upload work into LLMs during the peer review and grading processes. That work is confidential, and you have no right to share it without permission. You are taking someone’s intellectual property and giving it to the entire world without their consent.

This Day in Labor History: October 10, 1947. African workers on the Dakar-Niger Railway in modern Senegal went on strike with the demand that they be treated equal to French workers. This is a hugely important moment in both African labor history and the anticolonial struggle in west Africa!!!

Everytime I mention that BlueSky is just not good for non-US global news and discussion, I get piled on. BlueSky is great for many, many reasons, but the rest of the world is still very much on Twitter / X. What is happening in India is *massive*.

Trump has picked a side in the Russia Ukraine war. News organizations should make that clear. And every single Republican running for office should be forced to answer whether they, too, support Russia, and how much of Ukraine Russia should be allowed to rule.

Graydon Carter’s memoir says he wrote an unflattering piece about how vulgar Trump is for GQ. Thin-skinned Donald got employees to buy all the copies. Si Newhouse, noting the brisk sales, recommend that Random House publish “The Art of the Deal,” which led to “The Apprentice.” Hence this presidency.

Trump's options are even more limited now -- even if he made a deal tomorrow with maximum humiliation (just conceded), the war dynamics involve many more actors now. Other countries/groups always had agency in this war but now they're fighting and escalating.

In the decades since the end of the Cold War, US policy has fluctuated between disengagement, distrust, and - at the start - the aspiration that Russia could be encouraged to align with the US. Now the White House aspiration is that the US could align with Russia.

It's important to recognise is that this *isn't* about the US getting "back" to business with Russia, because there's never been much US-Russia business of any kind beyond arms control. What the Trump admin is pushing for is an unprecedented alignment of the US with Russia.

Ben Carroll wants to match the Libs’ plan to raise Vic’s land tax threshold from $50k to $300k. But cheaper landholding won’t help renters or homeowners. We need a tax shift: less tax on jobs and moving, more on land and resources. Read more: www.prosper.org.au/2026/10/land... #VICPol
It is a betrayal of working Victorians to make it cheaper to hold valuable land while leaving taxes on work, enterprise and moving house in place.

If Victoria wants genuine tax reform, it should remove stamp duty, reduce payroll tax, and shift the tax burden towards economic rents.

Tax the land, not the move.
Tax the unearned, not the earned.

I also think discourse around disinformation keeps falling into the trap of treating it as a supply side issue, rather than examining the demand side and what to do about that. That is a far more pressing, and far more complicated, problem.
