In many ways New Brunswick is a good look into the kind of corrupt, hyper-polarized politics that dominated all levels of Canadian government until the 1960s and 70s

The best summary of this I've ever found was when CBC ran a contest to find the canuck equivalent of 'As American as apple pie'. The winner was: "As Canadian as possible under the circumstances."

Most satires of reality TV have the rich watching the poor ruin their lives for entertainment (Squid Game, Hunger Games, like half the episodes of Black Mirror) but in reality it's usually rich people ruining their lives for the entertainment of poor people lmao

"our transit network is lacking because it's more focused on getting people to and from the core, and isn't very useful to suburb-to-suburb trips" is taken as true by urbanists everywhere but if you actually look at bus trips almost always the ridership is screaming for a more CBD-focused system.

I think what most progressive get wrong about Ford is that he is clearly seen by most of the electorate as a moderate, and I think he much more strongly represents how the Progressive Conservative tendency actually worked than the “red Tory“ nostalgia of the pundit class

One of the questions that has long flourished in my head is how, tactically and materially, transit networks abroad actually manage their service to produce better reliability outcomes than we're used to seeing on this side of the Atlantic.

A lot of Americans think we're just having an unnecessary trade dispute with a president occasionally making unfunny jokes, while the reality is there are elements in the US conservative movement actively trying to tear our country apart. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...

On the other side Alberta needs to wake the fuck up and realize that this war with Iran is accelerating EV and renewables in China, India and other places and that’s going to radically change oil demand sooner than it seems and devastate the oil sands. Both sides need to face the new realities

Most of those are supply manged, which is a literal government sponsored and protected cartel designed to raise prices. Artificially increasing the price of milk and eggs then layering price controls on top because the price is too high is completely incoherent

Alberta is the highest income region of the country, in no small part due to the labour demands of the expansion of the oil sands before 2014. Are you going to seriously promise to make sure that out of work oil workers continue to get paid more than everyone else?

The grand bargain of immigration policy in Canada was about recruiting future Canadians. Not creating a permanent underclass of low wage workers with no path to PR so Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons can increase their margins. And I think the public saw that.

Here it seems like Americans are trying to use it as a cudgel for why Canadians should trust the next US admin, and I would argue that this is in fact a reason to diversify our relationships - if you *almost* followed your friend over a cliff, it’s probably a good idea to broaden your friend group.

What we should want to avoid is shit like Dartmouth Cove, where the project gets kicked between three orders of government and like six departments and none of them want to approve it but also none want to shut it down. That’s bad!

John Rustad told me that he was kicked out of the B.C. Conservative caucus twice in the span of 12 hours.

I asked him how that happened.

Rustad said he got a text message from Findlay on Thursday night saying he had been removed from caucus. About 15 minutes later, she sent a text rescinding the message.

Not a popular opinion on the left but the best compromise btw rental protection and ensuring we can build might be some version of this. The mistake was probably freezing it in 2018 and not having it be some kind rolling number (idk, having it start after 5 years? 10?).
