If AI has enabled software development to be so much faster and easier, how come it doesn't feel like any of the software I use is getting rapidly better? As an end user, literally the only significant difference in my software experience from a few years ago is nagging AI buttons in all my apps.

Final list of number of candidates for all main parties for B.C.’s 93 provincial electoral districts: Conservative Party — 93 NDP — 92 Greens — 73 CentreBC — 35 OneBC — 33 NDP staff on the bus were very confident telling me I was wrong about claims they weren’t fielding a full slate 🙃

This is the first time I think that Sound Transit has actually shown a rendering of the infamous "trapezoidal" light rail station at Seattle Center that is expected to be $470 million cheaper than a simple box station, thanks to elimination of a mined section of tunnel.

That’s weird because I’ve been told you’d need about 8.3 billion police officers to handle this many car-free streets.

David Eby’s election campaign is the biggest own goal I've seen in politics in my lifetime. He's called an election to campaign on policies significantly to the right of the former Liberal government that John Horgan defeated. The NDP are literally the thing they claim to be fighting.

So the mill is going to reopen with an unspecified amount of provincial subsidy that was somehow agreed during an election caretaker period? The owner has previously shut down mills after receiving provincial funding. Is this just a band aid to last until the election?

Most of those are supply manged, which is a literal government sponsored and protected cartel designed to raise prices. Artificially increasing the price of milk and eggs then layering price controls on top because the price is too high is completely incoherent

I won’t belabour this because I’ve written about it before, but the part of Carney’s pipeline pivot that I find impossible to justify is the government taking on the demand risk.

I'll respectfully disagree, this provincial election is about serious and significant issues. Mostly, whether voterd want David Eby's policies from 2022 (Green), January 2026 (CentreBC), May 2026 (BCCons) or Oct 2026 (BCNDP).

Suspending gas taxes is the easiest move for politicians to make when gas prices are high and it's also the dumbest. It does very little to alter the material conditions of constituents, but costs a shit ton of money while slightly diluting the market signal that high gas prices should send.

Laughable. The province has no money and schools and hospitals are stretched to the limit and this is your plan? After spending billions on sprawl-supporting infrastructure in a province that still lacks basic intercity public transport.

I’m sad for David Eby. Before politics, he made a name for himself as a principled activist. But he’ll only be remembered as a premier who accomplished little besides blowing up democratic conventions in search of power. Power he still has no clue what to do with.

My work with Creig Lamb shows that low tech adoption in Canada is due less to limited capacity (e.g. resources, skills) & more to weak incentives (e.g. limited competition, healthy profits, high skill/lowish wage alternatives). This is yet another capacity- rather than incentive-focused program.

Caretaker convention has become an excuse for the civil service to not do anything it doesn’t want to do. The BC Attorney General is in the media today speaking in her official capacity as AG, but an independent public body can’t release a factual report because there’s an election? Come on.

An underlying problem for the NDP in BC, and it's a possibly fatal one, is that the decision to call an election to keep Conservatives out of power is paradoxical, since the NDP could have accomplished the feat by not having an election. That cannot be the reason by definition.

No, fixed election laws don’t prevent snap elections but going against it whenever it’s convenient further erodes public confidence in democratic institutions. It’s a mask off moment when parties show what they are really interested in.
