“I had that dream again. The one where I could have sworn I felt the wind as it shifted off the water. The sun began to warm the distant slopes and light the tops of nearby trees. I had that dream again, where I felt completely free.” "Remnants: Tranquility" #Watercolor, #gouache, #coffee #dragons
A painting in black watercolor and white gouache on coffee stained watercolor paper of a dragon on a rock in a mountain lake. The mountains in the distance are lit by the sun and the trees framing the illustration are dark black. Signed Katie Croonenberghs 2026, text kamakru.com

Just to elaborate, what I appreciate here isn't just the language and images, it's the way in which it gently snuggles up to that weird thing where there's a whole universe, which you can't help but perceiving is somehow just there for you. A whole sun had to exist to make light play on the wall.

Just stumbled across these terrific Jim Richardson photos of the annual spring prairie burning in Kansas's Flint Hills. Remarkable to think how native peoples set these enormous fires in the grasslands every year for centuries upon centuries. www.jimrichardsonphotography.com/index/G00002...
In an aerial fire, flames make serpentine patterns at dusk over the rolling terrain of Kansas's Flint Hills. Two burned trees are silhouetted against a sinuous arc of fire that twists toward the horizon at sunset.

So this photo contains zero birds, but in my defence, we were sitting outside waiting for birds. But the sun was almost setting and the backlit Snapdragons stole the show!
A backlit snapdragon flower that is partially opened. The background is dark green with a round sun like highlight in the top right corner. It’s actually an out of focus highlight that appears large because it’s a telephoto lens. The pink snapdragon flower is rim lit but has some light bouncing back to light the flower.
For those interested, the lens is a 400mm and required 5 frames focused on slightly different parts of the flower to be stacked together so the entire flower was sharp .

That is, if you light a candle for a god or ancestor or whatever, you see the destruction of the candle as a positive good, because it partakes of divinity appropriately. And so, if God says there's a day of rest, you should do likewise with your time.

Queen of Appalachia, by Asterosperma. www.asterosperma.com
A stylized picture of Dolly Parton almost like a tarot card. She sits with crossed legs on a wooden chair wearing an orange dress and cowboy boots surrounded by an ornate frame. Her right arm and hand is raised and her left one rests on her knee. Two small black bear cubs clamber up her legs. She is surrounded by butterflies and flowers. The background is a deep orange color.

The NSF Proposal is a serious threat to science.
The graphic contains a photo of Russell Vought. The graphic reads: "The Proposal: Removed requirements tied to statutory civil rights obligations; Applies international collaboration restrictions; Implements Vought's takeover of federal grants ahead of the OMB Proposal. Vought has framed the proposal's policies as merely "catching up" with executive orders."

Fascism is not (sorry Marxist friends!) a product of hyper-capitalism. Social democracies produce fascists; communist countries, through an almost political carcinization, come to resemble fascist regimes (see: Stalinism or North Korea or the evolution of the CCP into a authoritarian nationalism).

I like this notetaking example. it is a good case of how gender works. Notetaking has never been about producing a transcript. It is a bureaucratic skill in the 20th c. organixarion because it is SENSEMAKING. Those women socialized to take notes? They have been doing men’s metacognition for them

I'd like to add that because of this there is *one* use case for AI transcription: recording the meeting so that you can turn it into compact, meaningful notes with a to-do list after the meeting is over.

I think the proof that this isn’t strictly a EV problem outside of a vacuum is that if you asked this question with the exact same ratio of numbers but asked: A) $50/$1k B) $50k/$1M C) $50M/$1B I’d bet you see different answers for each. As numbers shrink, people become more willing to flip.

But it also came *late* for teaching. It’s 13 years between its first press run and the first practical sewing machine. And for the 1950s-90s, “women’s work” wasn’t well documented or considered worth much study. That’s what made Janet Arnold, the Costume Collection, &Cornell’s HEARTH revolutionary.

13. Hence our dismal conclusion: rather than finding that LLMs free us to do a better job of what we were doing before they came along, they shift scientific incentives (and the playing field of academic competition) in ways that compel us to do more and more, faster and faster, less and less well.

12. Here's the key insight though: as labor-augmenting technologies LLMs make researchers more productive and therefore they *raise the opportunity cost of researcher time*. As a result researchers will have incentives to invest less time in polishing a current project before moving on to a new one.

This is Comet Leonard during its approach to the Sun, imaged by Gerald Rhemann on Christmas Day 2021. The comet had been discovered earlier that year, and broke apart in 2022. This photo won the overall prize for Rhemann of the Royal Observatory Greenwich's Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2022.
A bright point of light at the top of the image is the comet's nucleus; the comet's gas and dust tails trail from the nucleus to the bottom of the image. Complex structures in the dust tail result from outbursts from the nucleus as it undergoes solar heating.

Beauty from the north shore of Lake Superior at Iona’s Beach Scientific and Natural Area. The beach is composed of smooth pink rhyolite pebbles and is known as a singing beach. When the waves are just right, a musical tinkling sound can be heard as water trickles through the stones.
A sunlit beach of smooth pink pebbles circles to the left before arcing back to the right while turning into pink Rhyolite cliffs topped with green in the distance. The lake is shades of blue that darken with distance, with a bank of fog coming in to touch the distant cliffs. The sky is clear blue with a hint of finger.White daisies with golden eyes, orange hawkweed, and unidentified yellow wildflowers of various types along a trail near Iona’s Beach.Orange hawkweed, and a yellow wildflower I think is Tall Buttercup along a trail near Iona’s Beach.
