Autistic people, particularty Black and Brown youth, face disproportionate risk during behavioral and mental health crises. Many high-risk moments begin at home, where caregivers often lack structured tools, training, and culturally responsive support. Tradtional crisis response models focus primarily on training law enforcement, leaving families, who are usualy the first responders. without adequate preparation. The consequences of this gap can be severe, and in some cases.
• Objectives
The Color of Autism Foundation, a minority-led nonproft organization serving underserved communities, developed Crisis Ready to shift the model from reactive crisis management toward Intentional prevention. The program's objectives are to strengthen caregiver confidence, reduce escalation within the home, and increase preparedness for high-stress situations, postioning families as designers of safety within their own environments.
• The Crisis Ready Model
Crisis Ready is a five-week hybrid crisis prevention and de escalation program for caregivers, self advocates, and extended famiy members. no curculum addresses anity, sensory differences, communication dierencos, traum exposure, and environmental stressors. Partopants engaoo in faciltased discussions, applied scenano exercises, and structured planning sessions that culminate in individualized Health Crisis Passports designed to guide emergency merdcions and promote saler outcomes
