To be given everything you think you want is a human nightmare. This is demonstrated well by the biggest AI boosters themselves, like Elon Musk. The key point is that this is selling out our allies and freedom for NOTHING other than, as Marcy points out, Putin possibly helping Trump out of Iran. I wonder if Russians catch wind of Trump's lies while lining up for diesel and get even more pissed at Putin. Tough but possible!

Months ago, workers at Simon & Schuster attended a workshop with representatives from OpenAI. “The person leading the workshop genuinely had no idea what we did,” an attendee says, but one of the AI company’s recommendations for how to use ChatGPT in the book trade was, in fact, composing emails to literary agents. The practice has also grown among editors at HarperCollins and Hachette, employees say.
In May 2024, staffers say Simon & Schuster held a contest among employees to come up with the best use cases for AI, with a $10,000 prize for the winner and $5,000 each for two runners-up. Since then, the company has “rolled back some of the AI-pushing because employees kept complaining about it in town halls,” says one employee. According to several staffers, AI assets are also cropping up in cover art, with some foreign presses distributed by Simon & Schuster openly acknowledging AI use when sharing designs.

Another longstanding party member said there was "clear evidence" of "a highly organised campaign by a small number of infiltrators to take over the party's key votes and committees".

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

Right after Justice Kennedy retired, #SCOTUS materially shifted its Eighth Amendment jurisprudence, moving away from a test tied to "evolving standards of decency," and toward a static assessment of what was cruel and unusual in 1791. That shift will matter a *lot* if there's a challenge in Hasan.

Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?
