Drunken Master 2 is an all-time great overall movie. Gorgeous is rather less great overall, but has an absolutely incredible fight with Bradley James Allan that ranks among Jackie's best. Truly phenomenal speed and control, the triple jump kick from Allan, chef's kiss youtu.be/3FUws-dFgHQ?...

The NEET rate basically hasn't changed for the whole of this century (except post-GFC and post Covid). It's been the same with tougher welfare sanctions and weaker. More apprenticeships and fewer. Higher employer national insurance and lower. I draw two conclusions from this....

We had a chemistry head of dept who did the notorious "coffee tin experiment" for every year group. A biiiig coffee tin had a hole punched in the lid, and another in the side low down by the base: this hole had a gas hose put in, the tin filled with gas, and the hose removed.

Bit of a question for my ND siblings. When learning things for a course or exam, do you have trouble with the common requirement to explain something in very basic terms? And then lose marks due to missing stuff out because it seems too obvious to mention, only to find that was the required answer?

Grey Charm (January 1967)
Margaret found her first grey hair when she was 19. By the time she was 25 the horned god of the wild earth had lavished her with a whole headful. She gave zero shits, embraced the situation unreservedly, used the money she had recently embezzled from Lord Tollerton-Whitworth to splurge on various requirements, including the first sprawling, half-derelict Gothic house she could find, got her nails done with no expense spared, then headed directly to the rescue centre. “No, not that one,” she said, as a young volunteer fetched a bony tabby for review. “That one there, at the back. The great big wide one with the eyes redolent of a rectal bombshell.”
Babushka groaned. She had been doing her best to melt into the walls. They were always gunning for her, these keen-fingered witchy types. Relentlessly felting tiny pointy hats for her, forcing her into diets against her will and making her pose awkwardly for photographs nobody would ever see. Three of them it had been now, in as many years. Each equipped with an apothecary table, a tarot obsession and a cupboard full of dried herbs. Babs had escaped from them all, only to return here. And now the cycle was renewing itself. Already planning her getaway, she vibrated sarcastically as Margaret sealed the barely accommodating basket. “Ahwwww, isn’t that sweet?” said Margaret. “Fwiends already.” “I’m not purring with you, you sashaying Wicca catastrophe,” thought Babs. “I’m purring at you.” When they arrived back at the house the place’s ambience was exactly the cliche she’d predicted but as they entered the converted attic office Margaret spoke with a candour and passion that surprised her. “This is where I keep the books,” she announced. “You’ll be taking care of those. British Telecom are installing the phone line on Monday. Unlock the front gate for the cunts and don’t disturb me unless it’s absolutely necessary. I worked my fragrant arse off to put myself in a position where I could turn this rea…

With footnotes and citations to make bigotry seem credible,

I traffic in ideas that have long since been discredited,
Like human races being real and IQ is inherited!

I’ll sign an open letter that legitimates my bigotry,
My gender ideology is thuggery and piggery,

If criticized it’s academic freedom I will hide behind,
My high and mighty principles shan’t be questioned by your tiny mind!

I realise it's a pretty niche thing to get excited about, but my new mortising chisels have arrived and now I'm looking forward to chopping holes in some oak this week. #woodworking
A set of Narex mortising chisels with dark brown handles, in sizes of 4, 6, 10 and 12 mm. They are thicker and a more acute angle (17°) than standard chisels, for withstanding being whacked into hardwood with a big mallet.Big chonky 12mm chisel. It has flat sides, a square cross section, and looks very pointy.Light shining off the pointy end of a 12mm chisel. It seems pretty sharp right out of the box, although I will still need to polish it up.

Little things that make a difference: slow in the workshop this week, as many people are on holiday and not ordering stairs and tables. So I'm putting a proper edge on the ancient set of chisels I got handed when I arrived. Left chisel is how I got them, right chisel is how I want them. #woodworking
Two woodworking chisels side by side. The larger one on the left is sharp-edged but with a lumpy surface that's obviously been freehand sharpened a lot of times.
The one on the right has had a flat surface of 30° ground on, and then sharpened and stropped until the edge is mirror surfaced.Same two chisels from a higher angle, showing the difference between the cutting faces.
