The Sharp TRP801 (1960)

A portable television, in a very 'space age' case: the top is ivory but the sides and frontispiece are cherry red. Twin antenna sprout from the back, a silver tilted carry handle sprouts from the top, and a huge silver grille allows both airflow and speaker. There are a bare minimum of controls on the top of the device itself: an on/off push toggle, a silver tuning dial, a rotary display behind a glass window for current station, and recessed plastic wheels for h-hold, v-hold, brightness, and volume.

My friend Mark Cho, co-founder of The Armoury, visited Lovat Mill in Scotland some years ago. He filmed this charming video with Lovat co-owner and design director Alan Cumming, who explains what goes into making tweed. You can see how many bright colors are used to make a "simple" earthy color.

Tweed is such a beautiful fabric to wear this time of year because it produces, in Dolly Parton's phrasing, a coat of many colors. Even a solid-colored brown is not just brown, but bits of red, blue, and yellow to produce something that looks lifted off the Scottish landscape.
