Hundreds of archaeologists 🏺across the country just lost their jobs with no notice, but did you know that companies are actually required by law to provide formal notice of mass layoffs at least 60 days in advance?
A square graphic with a light red and dark red sunburst background and 5 black silhouettes of people at the bottom of the image. Above them, in a starburst graphic, is the text "Know Your Rights During A Mass Layoff"

Archaeologist here. We can't generally carbon date pottery, unless you include some good carbon materials like shell temper. And because of nuclear testing and fossil fuels we don't use carbon dating for 19th/20th/21st century materials. Better to write the date on it.

One reason to learn about things outside your major is so that you have something to talk about with people at parties and on dates. No amount of money will make up for you being a crushing bore. History majors learn this early but I guess it takes other people longer.

I now explain the total amount of hours expected at the beginning of the semester because students have no idea. Many come to lab hours on a Wed or Fri to complete cataloging for Managing Archaeological Collections, and the ones that do learn more and do better in the class. But it's a lot of work!

It's also not magic beans. It's a word predictor. It's really fast at it and it's even learned to pick the next line in code to make the code do what you want it to, most of the time. (This tends to flatten all art and make it worse, but that's another thing.) But it isn't magic and it's not alive.

The output is not the issue. Even once the output is absolutely, unimpeachably perfect, superior to what a human could ever achieve, the output will not be the issue. The issue is that the "author" did not do the "grunt work", which is TO READ and INFER and COMPARE and CONTRAST. You know, LEARN.

This is one of those skills that we expect graduate students to pick up but rarely teach explicitly. But basically, most (all?) academics learn to read in a way that lets you extract what you need from a text as quickly as possible, because we have to process a lot of text as part of our jobs.
