this working paper from Harvard PhD students Fiona Chen and James Stratton is making the rounds, perhaps because it confirms many people's suspicions about the tradeoffs in vibe coding: LLMs mean lots more code written, but also lots more problems created, and relatively little productivity benefit

Bottlenecks in Software Production

Abstract
We study the impacts of AI coding assistants and agents on software engineering work, using
a novel proprietary dataset from an engineering analytics platform, covering 300 million work
events — including GitHub coding activity, Jira issues, and Google Calendar events — across
718 firms. We use a staggered difference-in-differences design, exploiting variation in firmlevel adoption timing of AI coding assistants and agents. Both technologies increase coding
productivity. However, productivity gains do not fully pass through to changes in software output
or employment. For AI agents, this incomplete pass-through reflects a bottleneck from code
review: review times increase, a larger share of code updates require revisions, and reviews
involve more comments. We develop a model of software production to structure these results, in
which AI affects both productivity and quality of intermediate outputs, and in turn can generate
a review bottleneck and limit pass-through.

A family member (female, Professor) worked on Hamilton's team as a grad student. She has fond memories of literally being in the capsules with astronauts as she programmed and tested. This was an extraordinary feat of science and technology. Thank you, Margaret, for your inspirational leadership.

Once again - the problem isn't "ooo AI models are too scary and powerful". It's that the developers of these products are irresponsible dolts, who have absolutely no intention of changing how they behave. Stop making excuses, use existing laws and make them responsible for their own actions.

Competitive Authoritarianism in America | Journal of Democracy
The United States has slid into competitive authoritarianism. The slide has been modest and remains reversible—but it is real. Even after Donald Trump, American democracy will remain fragile.

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

I'm guessing if you put up this graph in an intro statistics class and asked if it was a spurious correlation or not, the answers you'd get in different states would roughly align with the graph itself.

On a smaller scale, Australia is squeezing international students in much the same way. Hiking visa fees to study and fees to stay after study, turning down a higher percentage of applications, and limiting places at universities, Oz is losing global talent when it should be trying to grab it.
