man i hate when someone (even an ai hater) starts saying/warning that it's actually very competent in some particular area now because all it means is they identified an area where their personal bar for competency is low. the shit isn't good for anything there's just things you don't mind being bad

Really need tech reporters to stop being credulous to the “Our biggest weakness? Maybe our AI is TOO powerful.” It’s already fucking the economy and environment and being used to murder people in Palestine, but the ol “don’t look at the man behind the curtain” routine works on Tech journalists

It is really important to understand that anyone trying to claim this is a "technological transition" is either deeply misguided or trying to sell you something. What this is, is a deliberate act of harm being done by people with names and addresses.

What is happening is not that AI-generated cultural goods are replacing human-made cultural goods; what is happening is that capital is flowing out of the production of cultural goods *entirely,* making us all poorer for it.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

I thought this was just beautiful. Kurt Vonnegut takes a walk to mail a letter:
She calls out, “Where are you going?” And I say, “I am going out to get an envelope.” And she says, “Well, you’re not a poor man. Why don’t you buy a thousand envelopes? They’ll deliver them, and you can put them in a closet.” And I say, “Hush.”

I go next to the postal convenience center down the block at the corner of 47th Street and Second Avenue. The woman behind the counter says, “Thirty-nine cents for a stamp.” I say, “I only brought thirty-seven. When did that change?” She looked at me a long time. “Thirty-seven isn’t enough.” “Well that oughta be enough for one envelope,” I said. The line was getting longer.

The lady moved her hand into her coat. I knew this routine. I backflipped behind the man behind me in line, wrapping my elbow around his throat as I landed. By the time the stamp seller had unloaded her clip, I had full cover. The gentleman’s body dropped to the floor, six holes smoking. The package he was carrying fell to the floor with a heavy clunk. Whatever was in there, it would do.

I rolled my foot over the cardboard and did a “flick up” as they call it in soccer. I bounced the package once or twice on the back of my foot as the mail lady reloaded, then I launched it high and spun 360 to deliver my patented “Rising Phoenix kick”. The package caught fire as it shattered through the protective plexiglass window and struck the woman’s head with all the force and hatred I had learned to channel in my grueling tutelage under five fallen Wudang masters in my youth. The lady’s body exploded off of her bones, leaving just a blackened skeleton spinning in her office chair. “So it goes,” I said, but no one laughed. I guess they weren’t big readers.

And I go home. And I have had one hell of a good time.

We are dancing animals. How beautiful it is to get up and go out and do something. We are here on Earth to fart around. Don’t let anybody tell you any different.

the endpoint of chatgpt and other llm chatbot interfaces is a cohort of people who don't really live so much as they are on a sort of guided tour of their own lives, who have more or less totally abdicated agency and responsibility in favor of a step by step template of how to pretend to be a person

AI has not made us better, more productive, more successful or grown the economy outside of GPU sales and data center construction. It has also made the price of every single device of every kind more expensive, depressed the housing market, and increased literally everybody’s cost of debt.

I am done with this shit. It is over. The state of engineering right now is horrible. It has been half a month since I started a new role at a big company.
Nobody knows anything here. The specs, code, tests, PRDs, tickets, resolution of those tickets, reports, etc., everything is made by Claude Code.
Nobody on my team likes this. They are being forced to ship as much as they can. I have heard multiple times from higher management that pushing code is not a bottleneck, so why are we slow?People are working 12 to 13 hours a day just to press enter. Nobody is reading anything. Humans in corporate are doing nothing on their own. Everyone, literally everyone, from an L1 to an L7 engineer here is doing the same thing.
Talk to Claude. There is no sense of victory. Nobody is resolving bugs. In reality, nobody is thinking anymore.
Everything is done by LLMs. It is so soul-sucking. I would not mind it, to be honest, if we were at least given the time to check out the code and see what is going where. But no, the goal is to just ship. No matter what happens.

Any opportunity to re-post "When the Glove"
Web cartoon of the cartoonist waking up at 5 am, still half-asleep, saying "Just had such a good idea, gotta write it down", and is writing it on a piece of paper.

THE NEXT MORNING

The paper says "When the glove"

🧵: What the AI industry calls "agents" (a marketing term) are essentially software systems that use LLM output as further LLM prompts and as input for interfaces with useful computer systems (so the agent can write files, talk to the network, etc, and isn't just spewing its text into the void).

A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.
