X and Meta interfering in Brazilian elections. Starlink siding with Russia. That's just this week. It's not a word I use lightly, but we are at war with the tech oligarchs whether we like it or not.

They have stripped out finance, procurement, IT, project management offices, quality teams, you name it. It’s all but gone. No more “faceless bureaucrats” and “lanyard wearers”. #HealthNewZealand I’ll start calling it Te Whatu Ora again when it deserves the name it was gifted. #nzpol

Reposting AND quote posting because it can't be said enough: we must rebuke the narrative of "frontline" workers (who are So Important and Worthy unless they're on strike over shitty pay) and "back office" workers who contribute nothing and are acceptable casualties of public service cuts

This is really important. There are no “back office workers” vs “front line”. If the back office isn’t ordering supplies and doing the maintenance and cleaning the floors and everything else that needs to be done, who do you think does the work?

Even if you go full ghoul and only look at the gross figure, NZ Govt debt is pathetic compared to peers. When NZ got built over 100 years, the NZ Govt reduced its debt just *five times*. Our low debt and the general fking state of things is a sign of chronic under-investment over decades. [2/n]

Or, horror of horrors, highly commercialisable, then patented, then non-exclusive licensed at no cost to everyone who wanted it. That would be frivolous, eh?

I guess it depends on the kind of research. Blue Sky and non-commercialisable would be frivolous to the current govt.

I have been enjoying the flower photos here. Got inspired to pull out the digital camera. Not too fancy or anything. But the macro setting works pretty well!
A photo of a honeybee gathering nectar from an apple blossom. The wings are folded over the back. The visible forelegs are covered in pollen. A macro photo of a mānuka flower. The petals are light pink. The stamens kind of bend in towards the stigma. The centre is a darker pink /red.A macro photo of apple tree flower buds. A cluster of them in the foreground. They are reddish in colour.

Our #ResearchIsWork campaign is the longer term prong. Others are doing the reactionary prong. I feel that sometimes, those doing reactionary mahi are a bit blinded to the value of the longer term mahi in a way that makes it difficult for them to understand the longer term approach. #NZPOL

The mahi is divided. One team deals with the immediate. Another with the longer term. Both are necessary, but are not the same. This division of mahi share the same goal and allows each prong to do their part without having to do the other part. Or be distracted with the mahi of the other part.

A few years ago one of my friends explained to me that there is a common strategy amongst indigenous peoples working for change. It is two pronged in its essence. One prong deals with the immediate in a somewhat reactionary way. The other is focused on the longer term, often multigenerational.
