It has been one week since our new intern (and my office mate) joined us. So far Nelson Nutmeg is doing very well adjusting. He's gotten a bit more adventurous and vocal. Still very chill and purry.

This is a table of the responses to the Save Science Coalition asks for public research. It doesn't take much effort to see which party is the party of public research and science. Please share around. #NZPOL 🇳🇿
This is a table: These questions were based on the Save Science Coalition’s items for an incoming government to focus on for the research and science sector, and were sent to all parties who were invited to the pre-election forum we hosted in August 2026.
If in government, will you...

The upshot is that ACT, and National did not respond. NZ 1s and TPM did for two questions, Labour answered yes 2/3rd and somewhat for the balance, Opportunity yes for 3/4 and 1/4 somewhat.

The Greens answered Yes for every ask.

Description
Advances in next generation technologies have driven the costs of DNA sequencing down to the point that genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) is now feasible for high diversity, large genome species. Here, we report a procedure for constructing GBS libraries based on reducing genome complexity with restriction enzymes (REs). This approach is simple, quick, extremely specific, highly reproducible, and may reach important regions of the genome that are inaccessible to sequence capture approaches. By using methylation-sensitive REs, repetitive regions of genomes can be avoided and lower copy regions targeted with two to three fold higher efficiency. This tremendously simplifies computationally challenging alignment problems in species with high levels of genetic diversity. The GBS procedure is demonstrated with maize (IBM) and barley (Oregon Wolfe Barley) recombinant inbred populations where roughly 200,000 and 25,000 sequence tags were mapped, respectively. An advantage in species like barley that lack a complete genome sequence is that a reference map need only be developed around the restriction sites, and this can be done in the process of sample genotyping. In such cases, the consensus of the read clusters across the sequence tagged sites becomes the reference. Alternatively, for kinship analyses in the absence of a reference genome, the sequence tags can simply be treated as dominant markers. Future application of GBS to breeding, conservation, and global species and population surveys may allow plant breeders to conduct genomic selection on a novel germplasm or species without first having to develop any …

This part about food safety resonates today.
Food Safety
In 2003, the U.S. Department of Agriculture impaired the government’s ability to
obtain the best possible advice on foodborne illness by creating imbalance in an
important advisory committee.
Established in 1988, the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological
Criteria for Foods provides “scientific advice … to assure the safety of domestic,
imported, and exported foods.”72 Its advice, which must be “impartial,” 73 covers
how USDA should evaluate hazards like E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella and
Listeria.74 These bacteria were responsible for a series of foodborne outbreaks in
2002 that left dozens of Americans seriously ill or dead and led to the recall of
more than 40 million pounds of beef and poultry. 75
In March 2003, USDA Secretary Ann M. Veneman appointed nine members of
the food industry to the advisory panel, including Virginia Scott of the National
Food Processors Association and Robert Seward of the American Meat Institute.
The National Food Processors Association calls itself the “voice of the $500
billion food processing industry.”76 One of the American Meat Institute’s goals is
increasing the “profitability . . . of meat and poultry trade worldwide.”77 USDA
appointed no consumer representatives to the panel.

Yes, it has always been funding. The Beattie report from 1986 was as clear as a bell on that. It has only gotten worse since then. I would argue that there have been structural changes in this term that are a net negative. Including putting the control of most funding in one body.

OMG! If you are still looking for a recipe I'm happy to share mine. In the alt text below is my pot roast recipe with a kiwi twist. I've been making it this way for quite a while.
A pot roast in an casserole (white inside and red outside) sitting on a green pot holder on top of a black stove top.

Ingredients

    ~ 1kg Bolar Roast
    2 T Cooking Oil
    2 Onions (medium size)
    3 Potatoes
    3 Kumara
    2 Celery stalks
    2 Carrots (medium size)
    1/4 t Marjoram
    1/2 t Italian Herbs
    2 Sprigs Thyme
    2 Bay Leaves
    1/2 t Beef stock powder
    Salt
    Pepper

Takes 3 Hours. Serves 8.

Preheat oven to 180C

This recipe is very forgiving. No need to have exactly the ingredient amounts described.

Peel kumara and carrots. Chop up all the vegetables. Place them in a bowl and mix them up. Cut roast into ~80mm pieces. Heat oil in a heavy casserole. Brown the meat. Remove from oil and set aside. Deglaze the casserole with a few tablespoons of water. Add vegetables and bay leaves to casserole. Sprinkle stock powder on vegetables. Place meat on top. Sprinkle herbs on top of meat. Add salt and pepper to taste (not too much). Cover. Bake for ~2 hours. Remove from oven and serve.

Shades of the 2003 Iraq war. Another that was started under bogus pretenses. Pictured is the back of a tee shirt from a volunteer effort led by my Dad. Details in the alt text.
The back of a white tee shirt. There is printing in black. At the top it says 'OPERATION "FEEL GOOD" UNDERWEAR FOR THE TROOPS CIVIC AUDITORIUM JULY 12, 2003. Under that it says "Thank you to our sponsors" Then the sponsors list as well as "Let us be the 1st to say... Welcome Home!" and "WELCOME HOME TROOPS".

The reason this shirt exists is that my Dad saw on the news back in 2003 that US troops in the middle east didn't have clean serviceable underwear. He thought that was horrible and talked some of his mates into organizing a volunteer effort. That effort collected a bunch of items that were needed, but not provided by the military, like underwear. Then they held a packing event. That's what happened on the 12th of July 2003 at the La Porte Civic Auditorium.

Dad died in 2014, so he's not around to do this again. It is such a pity that it is needed now for the reasons it is.

P.S. I miss my Dad. This story is one of many where he saw some kind of need and tried to help.

Usual pitfalls apply.
Screen shot of text from linked article:

But we must also be aware of the pitfalls ahead. Some Canadian tech executives that, until recently, were pushing for a Conservative government are embracing a program of digital sovereignty as well, but it is explicitly not one that centres the public good. Instead, they’re pushing the government to continue pulling back on regulations, while deploying billions through public procurement, incentives, and subsidies to flood into their businesses. They want to hold onto the Silicon Valley model and the harms that it’s created, but better cash in on it for themselves. They want to join the digital colonizers rather than bring them down.

We've been working on our berry patches the last several weekends. Yesterday, we completed the enclosure for the boysenberries and black berries. 😋 Particularly pleased that almost all the materials were repurposed from things around the place. Nothing used was new. In the centre is a set of three parallel wires through which the berries are growing. There are arches holding up the netting. They are made of 2M rebar stakes with 4.6 M of black alkathene connecting them to provide the support. The netting is black ex vineyard netting. On the right, one can see concrete blocks that have been laid down. On the left back some other concrete blocks and left fore some cardboard. These are to keep the weeds down.

One might think companies would know this by now. This quote below from a 2004 Eben Moglen speech at Harvard Law School lays out precisely why the GPL proves itself. A substantial portion of innovation in software development is underpinned by this license. Extending the philosophy behind it 1/2
But notice that in order to survive moment one in a lawsuit over free software, it is the defendant who must wave the GPL. It is his permission, his master key to a lawsuit that lasts longer than a nanosecond. This, quite simply, is the reason that lies behind the statement you have heard—Mr. McBride made it here some weeks ago—that there has never been a court test of the GPL.

I'm reading @georgemonbiot.bsky.social and and Peter Hutchison's Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism. They offer this definition of capitalism. See alt text for more. I just finished The Internet Con: How to Seize the Means of Computation by Cory Doctorow. NFTs are now gone...
Screen shot of text: "Capitalism is an economic system founded on colonial looting. It operates on a constantly shifting and self-consuming frontier, on which both state and powerful private interests use their laws, backed by the threat of violence, to turn shared resources into exclusive property, and to transform natural wealth, labor, and money into commodities that can be accumulated."
This is from the book Invisible Doctrine: The Secret History of Neoliberalism by George Monbiot and Peter Hutchison. It is offered as a definition of capitalism. IMHO this is very useful in a variety of ways, not the least of which that it distinguishes capitalism from commerce. Many seem to think that commerce is capitalism rather than a form of trading that precedes capitalism by thousands of years.
By using their definition of capitalism as a lens through which to examine current govt. and industry actions around the world, a much clearer understanding can be gained. To pick a few, the current actions of the Trump led US government and the many policies the AoNZ govt has pushed through under urgency - including the new pay equity law.

In the foreground is a small utility trailer parked on sparse grass. The frame is steel covered in surface rust. The bed is a brand new black sheet of plywood with a bit of dust on it. The trailer is backed up to a farm fence of 7 wires. Directly behind that is a row of fir trees forming a shelter belt. Behind that is a padock and another shelter belt.

Pulled this final paragraph from the Roper paper (New Zealand Sociology 2024, Vol. 39, No. 1, 39–59) references below. See alt text. I strongly recommend people following this account to read it. I finished my first read today. Will read it again because there is a lot there to take in. #NZPOL
Finally, for critically minded social scientists and humanities scholars, research on neoliberalism
should always aim to provide intellectual resources of hope. “To be truly radical is to make hope possible
rather than despair convincing” (Williams, 2022). The intelligent young people whom we are lucky enough
to teach and learn from are dealing with the negative effects of neoliberalism on their daily lives now, and
also experiencing mounting eco-anxiety. We owe it to them to contribute to collective thinking about how
and why better policies and a better world are necessary, feasible and possible.

The history of the media reform movement may be useful today. Abstract in alt text. 2/2
he influence of media on society is unquestioned. Its reach penetrates nearly every corner of the world and every aspect of life. But it has also been a contested realm, embodying class politics and the interests of monopoly capital. In The Political Economy of Media, one of the foremost media critics of our time, Robert W. McChesney, provides a comprehensive analysis of the economic and political powers that are being mobilized to consolidate private control of media with increasing profit — all at the expense of democracy. In this elegant and lucid collection, McChesney examines the monopolistic competition that has created a global media that is ever more concentrated and centralized. McChesney reveals why questions about the ownership of commercial U.S. media remain off limits within the political culture; how private ownership of media leads to the degradation of journalism and suppression of genuine debate; and why corporate rule threatens democracy by failing to provide the means for an educated and informed citizenry. The Political Economy of Media also highlights resistance to corporate media over the last century, including the battle between broadcasters and the public in the 1920s and 1930s and the ongoing media reform movement today. The Political Economy of Media makes it clear that the struggle over the ownership and the role of media is of utmost importance to everyone.

And funding opportunities for the social sciences and humanities have been cut from the Horizon Europe programme. 🤬
Changes to MBIE’s Horizon Europe Top-Up fund scheme

Tēnā koutou

MBIE is providing an update on the Horizon Europe Top-Up funding scheme.

Change to Top-Up fund eligibility for projects in Cluster 2

From 1 February 2025, projects in Cluster 2, Culture, Creativity & Inclusive Society, will no longer be eligible for funding through the MBIE Horizon Europe Top-Up funding scheme.

This change is being made to align the Top-Up fund settings with the Government’s priorities for Science, Innovation & Technology investments, and direction outlined in the Catalyst Fund investment Plan. Research organisations who have submitted a proposal for a Cluster 2 project which opened before 1 February 2025 and who registered for Top-Up funding with MBIE within 10 working days of the European Commission (EC) call for proposals closing will still be eligible for Horizon Europe Top-Up funding.

A bit of fun for the weekend timeline. I make schnapps and liqueurs as a bit of a hobby. They all take a lot of inactive time. Today, I finished the walnut liqueur. It starts out as vodka, green walnuts, and patience. It takes at least a year from start to finished product. 1/2
A clear shot glass 3/4 full of a dark brown liquid. It sits on a wood chest top. The background is a wall painted green a little lighter than avocado. The liquid in the glass is walnut liqueur.

@nicgaston.bsky.social posted this NBR review piece about the show Collins put on at the KiwiNet Awards. It was clear that the mask was off. More people should know about this. I reckon it will help us come to grips with what she is doing.
Screen shot of a National Business Review anonymous comment. The gist of it is Science (sic) Minister Collins raging at a scientist at an awards ceremony. Collins says "No, you give us some money" "Yes, that's right, it's time to bring home the bacon, and sorry if anyone is offended by that. Sorry, not sorry. The country is counting on you."

I watched that episode last night. It is titled "Edith Breaks Out". In the 70's there was white pop culture thing about Archie Bunker for President. I got the t-shirt as a hand-me-down. Didn't expect it to actually happen...
Printed text on a t-shirt. In the centre is an image of a man's head with a big cigar sticking out to the bottom left. Above that is red text "Archie Bunker". Below and left is "For" and at the bottom "President".
