did you know that we get the word "cockamamie" from a bastardization of a term ("decalcomania") for a period in the 1930s after temporary tattoos were invented by the French and kids were running around putting them on fucking everything?! 🐦🐦🐦

“Bongo” Ballpoint pen, pencil, watercolor, acrylic paint, and a little colored pencil.

Our man is in trouble this time, reader. Art supplies are scattered around a painting of an abstract cityscape. On the canvas we see a man in a telephone booth making a frantic call to his cat, Bongo. In the foreground, an answering machine is taking his voicemail, [Leave a message at the beep] --- “Bongo, Daddy got stuck in the painting. Go get help, Bongo.” Bongo stands at the base of the easel looking at the phone. Her tail in the air and ears perked up. Whether she’ll be able to help is open to interpretation.

Artist’s note: One of my favorites from the Spooky Pants book. I was playing around with the idea of a painting coming to life (like that guy in Ghostbusters 2) and kind of fumbled my way into this version. I really draw a lot of corded phones. I won’t stop.

Raqefet Cave in Israel was a sacred burial site for the hunter-gatherer culture known as the 'Natufians' around 13,000 years ago. More recently, we've also discovered here the earliest evidence of BEER BREWING from grains. Even more remarkable because these people HADN'T INVENTED AGRICULTURE YET.

Finally illustrated this idea like I’ve wanted to do since I posted this three years ago!! 🌿🖤
A woman who is covered in a splotchy nebula texture of blue, green, purple, and pink. She is leaning forward with her hands behind her slightly arched back. In her hands are a lulav (long rod made of three different tree branches), and an etrog (a fruit with an elongated and bumpy lemon shape/color).

Her leg is signed “M.Nutz”

Surrounding her in bold black handwriting is the quote: “Joy is a deep release of the soul, and it includes death and pain. Joy is any feeling fully felt, any experience we give our whole being to. We are conditioned to choose pleasure and to reject pain, but the truth is, any moment of our life fully inhabited…any immersion in the full depth of life, can be the source of deep joy.” — Rabbi Alan Lew

OK, let me amend that. If your alt text is "meme from TV show", it's not good enough. You don't have to write a ton, but you have to get the gist of the image across, which includes relevant text or dialogue.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Amazing.
The Bluesky timeline shows urbanbohemian's post about overnight oats success directly above a different user's post saying:
"oh, bother.

There go my oats."
Said post shows a picture of a bowl shattered on what appears to be a kitchen floor. The bowl appears to have contained oats in some configuration, overnight or otherwise.

There is no evidence of urbanbohemian being involved in this incident, and no reason to allege that their "success" is related to the other user's bother. It is probably a complete coincidence, and you would not get far claiming otherwise in a court of law.

Regardless, the loss of oats is very sad.

Sender:
"Do you know why sharks live in salt water"

Recipient:
"I mean it's all about osmotic balance. Saltwater fish are usually about isosmotic with saltwater and don't have to regulate their water input and output as much. There are some purely freshwater sharks are rays, though, including Amazonian stingrays, the entirely freshwater shark species in SE Asia and australia, giant river rays, and of course the part-time freshwater habits of bull sharks"

"It's pretty taxing evolutionarily to disrupt that, it has a lot to do with kidney function and water intake. In generally, freshwater fish don't drink water bc they have to retain their ions and such"

"And usually, the ecological niches that sharks would occupy in freshwater are either already taken, or the freshwater system isn't big enough or too inaccessible to support it."

"The Amazon basin, rivers in SE Asia, African Great lakes, and American great lakes are basically the places that are big enough to support it. Of those, the Amazon is taken by catfish and arapaima, SE Asian rivers already do have freshwater sharks, and the two great lakes systems are largely inaccessible from the ocean so it's harder for sharks to get in and speciate"

"Why do you ask?"

Sender:
"Because pepper water would make them sneeze"

being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years

seravph
what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made
