Trans and non-binary individuals have been warning for years that anti-trans policies will also harm cis women. Determining access to toilets based on how someone looks inevitably means anyone who doesn't look exactly like some stereotype transphobes have in their heads will end up getting harassed.
Trans people could be banned from single-sex spaces based on how they look

The Times has seen the equalities watchdog's final guidance, which Whitehall figures fear Bridget Phillipson is delaying to avoid a political backlash

Geraldine Scott, Assistant Political Editor

Wednesday November 19 2025, 8.50pm, The Times

Transgender people could be banned from single-sex spaces based on what they look like, according to new equalities guidance seen by The Times.Under the new guidance, places such as hospital wards, gyms and leisure centres will be able to question transgender women over whether they should be using single-sex services based on how they look, their behaviour or concerns raised by others.

In April, I wondered what a trans toilet ban might look like in practice. Trans people and their cis women allies have been sounding these alarms for years. It now seems clear that the UK government took all these dire warnings as policy proposals. www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle-co...
With 8,000 holders of gender recognition certificates now unsure if they’re barred from peeing once they leave the house, some have argued that the provision of millions of unisex toilets might be the answer. Considering these would be the same unisex toilets they never got round to building for Britain’s 4m pre-school age kids — and their awkward dads — we can dismiss this stalling tactic with the contempt it deserves.
We might also consider what this means for the millions of cis women who do not fit the standard, sexist notion of “femininity” which logic dictates they must be checked against to enforce this ruling.
Too tall, perhaps, too strong-jawed, or short-haired — anything that one patron, one witness, one supermarket or leisure centre security guard might consider cause to question their femininity. And how might they prove their “real” gender?
How would you? Perhaps my conception of feminism has been mis-calibrated all this time, and true freedom for women is mandating that they carry their birth certificates around with them all day, so they can be checked by citizen genital inspectors, male and female, encouraged to presume you’re a predator first, and work backwards from there.

Did anyone on the production team pause to consider the narrative consequences of that? Did they think, "Hey! Wasn't a big part of the original debate here about whether a privileged white author was persistently centering herself and aggressively adopting a victim pose in response to criticism?" 3/

God, the whole article is so deeply dishonest. Clanchy's book was "suddenly derided" - no mention that the "sudden" trigger was Clanchy loudly demanding an obscure Goodreads review be taken down b/c of racist quotes she claimed were made up, prompting everyone to check and find out they were genuine
In 2021, when lockdown was driving people insane, Clanchy’s 2019 book about working with children, Some Kids I Taught and What They Taught Me, was suddenly derided on social media as racist, because she used physical descriptions like “chocolate-coloured skin”. The charge was led by three women: Monisha Rajesh, Sunny Singh and Chimene Suleyman, all middle-aged, middle-class writers, like Clanchy. Pan Macmillan, Clanchy’s publisher through its Picador imprint, abjectly apologised to them and parted ways with its writer. But apologies never satisfy witchfinder generals like Rajesh, Singh and Suleyman because, as one children’s author (who is still too scared to give her name) said to me last week, “They don’t want to fix problems, because their entire brand is outrage. That’s how they promote themselves.”

Emily Maitlis seems unable to apply the same standard to her (or the media's, more generally) coverage of "trans issues" 🤔 In fact, it's worse than that. Her starting point is simply that healthcare experts are wrong, for #reasons, and she and her fellow GC journos are brave for pointing it out.
A picture of journalist Emily Maitlis (she's wearing a strappy black dress for some reason, and has a slight smile).

The quote reads, "It might take our produces five minutes to find 60 economists who feared Brexit and five hours to find a sole voice who espoused it.

"But by the time we went on air we simply had one of each; we presented this unequal effort to our audience as balance.

"It wasn't."

The Patriotic Blonde on Twitter writes: "People are posting this all over social media.

What a sad end to something we all worked so hard for.

I never thought it would end this way."

Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far. So much work remains to be done.

It's wild to me that Kate Clanchy felt like she could make a living being a keen tutor to and observer of other people and yet, she seems totally unprepared to grow as a human being. Who hasn't had their unconscious prejudices challenged over their career?

Another of Clanchy's defenders was Philip Pullman. Ignoring the clearly bigoted and discriminatory content of her book, which was accurately reported, he thought it appropriate to brand her critics the Taliban.

Critics of Kate Clanchy: is this the kind of support you welcome? Someone who thinks it's not necessary to read a book before condemning it? What a shameful attitude. It would find a comfortable home in Isis or the Taliban.

What happened to Kate Clanchy? She attacked an amateur book reviewer for accurately quoting her work. Then when it was proven to be accurate, set her publishing pals on people who politely critiqued her work. It is genuinely bonkers that Clanchy has been reframed as some sort of victim.

And, the BBC have managed to wangle an actual apology (???) out of Kate Clanchy's former publisher, whom she parted ways with not long after this controversy for the "hurt" it caused her. You'd think a journalist might follow up and ask them what about the hurt that Clanchy caused people?

The BBC are dragging up the whole Kate Clanchy affair, four years later, with a SIX part podcast. There is no public interest reason for this, and they are just going to retraumatise the victims: the people who criticised Clanchy. One of them has already started receiving hate mail again.

The framing on the BBC website is infuriating. "The review accused her book of using racist language. Kate rejected this". Ah. So, could we see the language? No? Why might this be? Why might it not be convenient to have examples like 'Ashkenazi nose' or 'chocolate skin' put in front of us?
In 2021, Kate Clanchy found herself in the eye of a Twitter storm after posting a negative review from the website Goodreads of her memoir - Some Kids I Taught and What They Taught Me - based on decades of teaching students from marginalised backgrounds in UK state schools. The review accused her book of using racist language. Kate rejected this – and initially posted the review onto Twitter to call attention to what she saw as inaccuracies - but soon, more critics started to publicly call the language in her book racist, ableist and classist.

Just the year before, the same memoir had won the prestigious Orwell Prize for Political Writing. When it was released, it was praised for offering a raw and human portrait of the realities of teaching. But in a matter of months, Kate Clanchy went from literary doyenne to cultural outcast. Her career, she says, destroyed.

For many who were involved in this story, these events changed their lives. Today, Kate Clanchy still feels she was treated unfairly. Her critics believe they were right to call her out.

The BBC and The Times have decided to resurrect the victimhood of Clanchy. But the facts are the facts: Clanchy wrote her racist, Islamophobic, ableist, and Anti-LGBT thoughts for all to see, and when challenged attempted to deny it. (See full 🧵). bsky.app/profile/snig...
