Short 🧵 After a bookish fundraiser yesterday, a lovely young Palestinian poet from Gaza asked an unexpected question: “why do you teach?” My answer: “to build the future.” To build a different, better, just future from what the Empire allows us.

The UK on the other hand has GCs within Labour, top medical institutions, EHRC, medical journals such as the BMJ, and of course the British press. At every level GC's have done complete institutional capture of key influential positions to erase trans rights.

Yes, the Trump admin controls HHS, FTC, and DOJ and is using that to pursue anti-trans policies but that is tied to a single administration. Broader institutions have for the most part held on protecting trans folks. Event the ones that folded mostly did so because of threats by the Trump admin.

This is just social media. This does not include all of the money Rowling spends enforcing her views on the rest of the UK by threat of SLAPP suits. One of the reasons I remain hopeful in the US is how partisan anti-trans views remain here along with the relative lack of institutional capture.

Rowling's median engagement exploded after Elon took over. Her posts were regularly getting tens of thousands of engagements. Her anti-trans tweets became an increasing part of her presence on the site and it now makes up nearly half of all her posts (with conservative methodology).
A line graph titled "Engagement rose for everyone after the takeover — trans-focused accounts no more than the rest; Rowling far more." The x-axis tracks time from 2020 to mid-2026. The y-axis measures the ratio of "median likes per original tweet ÷ own pre-takeover-year median," ranging from 0 to over 25. Vertical dashed lines mark the "Musk takeover" on October 27, 2022, and a "Blue-check ranking boost" in April 2023. A dark blue line (representing a comparison roster of 148 accounts) and a teal line (representing 30 trans-focused accounts) both show a minimal, gradual increase in engagement, reaching roughly 3 to 4 on the y-axis by 2026. Conversely, an orange line representing @jk_rowling spikes dramatically after the late 2022 takeover, soaring to a peak above 25 in early 2026 before dropping to roughly 11.A line graph on a dark background titled "1 · The Descent." A caption explains the chart tracks the "Share of her tweets each year that are about trans people or gender identity." The x-axis spans the years 2009 to 2026, and the y-axis displays percentages from 0% to 50%. A red line with points for each year shows that the share of these tweets remained at a flat 0% from 2009 through 2018. The line begins to rise slightly in 2019 and 2020, then climbs sharply upward. The share surpasses 12% in 2021, crosses 25% by 2023, and peaks at approximately 40% to 45% (described in the text as "about two-in-five") in 2024 and 2025, followed by a slight decrease in 2026. The area underneath the rising line is shaded in a muted red.

One thing I wish people would realize is just how central JK Rowling is to the entire anti-trans ecosystem. Looking at a network node analysis of the top 200 anti-trans X accounts, she is the most central figure spanning both sides of the Atlantic from Republicans to Labour.
A network graph visualization on a dark background showing connections between various accounts. The central, highly connected node is labeled "J.K. Rowling," with lines radiating out to many other nodes color-coded by region (UK, US, etc.). A detail panel on the right displays stats for her account, including her role as "Author & commentator," an in-degree of 153, an out-degree of 84, and 14 million followers.A scatter plot graph on a dark background comparing accounts based on "followers (log)" on the x-axis and "in-degree" on the y-axis. The data points are color-coded by region. J.K. Rowling is highlighted as a major outlier in the top right corner, possessing the highest number of followers and the highest in-degree. Other labeled points lower on the graph include various politicians, individuals, and campaign organizations.

What's stuck out to me is just how central UK GC Twitter is to the broader anti-trans ecosystem. While the US right drives a lot of the engagement, they're not as singularly focused and influential within the broader anti-trans network. The UK GC crowd drives the narratives that the US right adopts.
A data table titled "Rankings" on a dark background, listing accounts sorted in descending order by their "in-degree" score. J.K. Rowling is ranked first with an in-degree of 153. The subsequent top accounts include Helen Joyce, TransgenderTrend, Maya Forstater, and Sex Matters. The table displays additional columns for each account's role, community, country, and various network analysis metrics like out-degree, betweenness, and PageRank.A screenshot of a data table on a dark background displaying a list of accounts filtered by the role "Academic," showing 11 of 216 total accounts. The table is sorted in descending order by the "IN-DEG" (in-degree) column. The top accounts listed include Kathleen Stock, Emma Hilton, Colin Wright, Professor Alice Sullivan, Jon Pike, Leor Sapir, Prof Jo Phoenix, and Richard Dawkins. Other visible columns display network and social metrics such as Community, Country, Out-Degree, Betweenness, Constraint, Reciprocity, PageRank, Authority, K-Core, and Follower counts.
