When you came, you said to me as follows: "I will give Gimil-Sin well-aligned AGI." You left then but you did not do what you promised me. You put AGI which was not aligned before my messenger and said: "If you want to save 10^50 future lives, take this; if you do not want to, go away!"

you are constantly in a not metaphorically homicidal rage. the most important thing you do, watching gore videos, is for the purpose of keeping you in a homicidal rage. this is a thing you think is healthy and important. you were screaming at senior citizens to kill themselves in a Panera Bread.

is there any moment in the process of getting trespassed out of a Panera Bread for screaming, alone, that you thought that there might be something wrong. that perhaps some of this was a sign that there was a problem. and that that problem included the fact that you were screaming in a Panera Bread.

hopefully a longer essay about this later, but it's striking how familiar the situation of the japanese public during the russo-japanese war is. no at home experiences the war directly: they learn about it via what they read. and they are extremely active, extremely angry, and extremely misinformed.

William Gibson, 'Idoru':

'Slitscan's audience ... is best visualized as a vicious, lazy, profoundly ignorant, perpetually hungry organism craving the warm god-flesh of the anointed. Personally I like to imagine something the size of a baby hippo, the color of a week-old boiled potato, that lives by itself, in the dark, in a double-wide on the outskirts of Topeka. It's covered with eyes and it sweats constantly. The sweat runs into those eyes and makes them sting. It has no mouth, Laney, no genitals, and can only express its mute extremes of murderous rage and infantile desire by changing the channels on a universal remote. Or by voting in presidential elections."

Many people don't understand probability very well and many of them are resistant to having it explained to them. This leads some designers to creating mechanics that work like the player's instinctive (read: fucking wrong) understanding of probability, further confusing everyone.

I think reactions like these are basically the explanation for the vibecession: social media has crated a post-truth social environment where "no one can afford anything, the economy is awful" is a statement of ideological allegiance, NOT a factual statement to be supported or rebutted by evidence.

If you say "The economy is far better than 2008" people do not parse that as an objective claim to be assessed. They see it as you announcing your support for the powers-that-be -- some unholy amalgamation of centrist Democrats and now, the Trump administration as well.

when people point out how unpleasant we are, we claim to be a small bean and deny everything we just did in public while also simultaneously saying the targets deserved it and threatening to hurt anyone that points out we are lying by doing the thing we deny doing.

Okay, so I have a plan to get everyone on our side. First, we be absolutely as viscerally unpleasant as possible. Next, we downplay any time we get what we want, say it's the bare minimum and so forth. Finally, if anyone gives up and says we win or apologizes, we belittle them.

I’d go further and attribute it to reflexive contrarianism and the belief that the “real story” is always more complex than the “conventional narrative.” The nuance and rationality just isn’t there, so it’s a sanewashing defense of the indefensible. This seems to afflict a lot of journalists.

But also, sometimes there's no daring maneuver and series of triple backflips that provide a good choice, at least at a given moment. Sometimes everything is on a gradient of badness, and it's depressing and infuriating, and it's still important to distinguish between what's more and less bad.

If people want a discrete flaw of woke 1.0, this is a good one. The emphasis on “listening to lived experience” creates an incentive to present yourself as the arbiter of that experience, which unscrupulous people will take advantage of.

What’s that? You’re missing epistemic gatekeepers who would place complex facts in context? Tough shit
