Back when I was in grad school there was a historiographical trend arguing that 19th-century caudillos weren't just charismatic strongmen, they had coherent political programs that followers supported out of rational self-interest, and I kind of wonder if that stance has lost ground in recent years

Ink and watercolor sketches from 2011 at top and a 4 piece ink and watercolor from last night 2026. At top is an Oviraptor and a cassowary. On bottom at left is the head of a hen and at right the head of a very polite looking green Allosaurus. Then below is a hen in the snow facing inward and at right a Velociraptor facing inward with feathers the color of snow.

I hope Zohran stays mayor for a long time both bc it looks like he's doing a good job but also because once he runs out of New York history facts I want to see him pivot to talking about the tunnels where Mimic happened or the logistics of how the city would handle a Q: The Winged Serpent situation

After LANTERNS episode 6, I'm even more confused about this - what did Hal go to jail for? (And was it Earth jail, or space jail?) Why does Hal owe amends because most of Rushville willingly protected a genocidaire who offered good health benefits (before she used space lasers to shoot up the town)?

Question for law-talking folks - is there actually a First Amendment issue with banning outlets from the White House, if other restrictions aren't put on reporting and publication? Presumably lots of news orgs already lack WH access - does revoking existing credentials cause specific legal problems?

as always: no one was doing it like Trebek slate.com/culture/2026...
After Jeopardy! announced its inaugural teen competition, in which 15 kids would face off for a grand prize of $25,000, hotel ballrooms filled around the country. In Cleveland, Trebek‍—‌“handsome as a matinee idol in the Rock Hudson mold and sporting a white satin Cleveland Browns jacket,” per the Plain Dealer at the time—turned up at an audition of 200 teenagers, where he talked up his theory of what set Jeopardy! apart from other game shows. “I think Jeopardy! has contributed to the idea that it’s OK to be bright,” he said. “And here’s a quote—I’m pontificating again—Jeopardy! reinforces the learning ethic in this country.”
Eschliman (2012): I was the last taping and I really had to pee. A producer said to me, “The closest bathroom is technically a women’s bathroom, but you can use it anyway. I won’t tell.” Then the man in front of me turns around and it’s Alex Trebek wearing khakis and a white V-neck. And the V-neck is so deep—like, his chest hair spilled over. And he just goes, “You’ll be safe.” He also was wearing a gold chain, which I thought was interesting.Ryan Godfrey (1989 semifinalist): The night after the first taping, we all had dinner with Alex on the set of Soul Train, which was the next studio over. I don’t think I had ever seen Soul Train at that point, so I wasn’t quite as appreciative of how strange and wonderful that detail was as I later came to be. If I remember right, we ate turkey tetrazzini. Alex was very friendly and seemed to enjoy talking to and joking with all of us. I remember him wearing some kind of late-’80s version of a leisure suit with an open collar.

I don't know if this is particular to America, or modernity, or what, but a lot of people really seem to struggle with the idea that sometimes choices have to be made in situations where no good choice is available (including the choice of removing oneself from the situation)

Creature Concept: Jellyfish Dragon

Digital art of a small lizard-like dragon. Its wings form a circular shape around its body, and they are filled with rows of amber-colored air bladders. The dragon has blue scales, and a pair of horns that are forked at the ends. Its eyes are orange and gecko-like, and rows of brown seaweed-like tendrils hang from the skin on its throat. Its entire body has black freckles.

Conquest of Mexico. Incredible setting and backstory, a complex female role with La Malinche, cross-cutting allegiances (including Gonzalo Guerrero joining the Maya), lots of dramatic twists, new characters like Narváez and Cuauhtémoc to enliven later seasons, and a naval battle for the big finish.
