7/ Allison Yash - People are understandably exhausted, especially academics managing multiple crises: budgets, enrollment, free speech attacks, science under siege, censoring and controlling educational content. There is too much quiet compliance and complacence. We’re all Columbia now.

6/ Vince Hutchings tells us that racial animus is not the reason for racial bias, interest in maintaining a racial hierarchy is. The forces fighting to save the union and the forces fighting for racial justice are not the same—they weren’t during reconstruction—if they were, we wouldn’t be here now.

5/ @kevintmorris.bsky.social reminds us of the importance of the Voting Rights Act and the threat it is under (Louisiana v. Callais). Federal government at all levels is stepping back from protecting voting rights in systemic ways, unseen since the end of Reconstruction in 1877.

There is a lot to contend with in this from @thrasherxy.bsky.social. I’m increasingly coming to this conclusion that schools aren’t capitulating, they are collaborating.
To call this a “capitulation” is wrong. Universities are winning these cases, but schools like Northwestern, Cornell (payoff: $60 million) and Columbia (payoff: $200 million) are not “capitulating.” These schools’ boards seem to like what Trump is doing, are happy with his agenda, and see their payoffs as money well spent to get rid of pesky faculty dissent, and student protests, transgender youth healthcare.

Some researchers, like myself, care about knowledge production and finding the "right" answer. Others care more about getting a publication based on saying that others are wrong rather than engaging in a discussion about what the current state of knowledge is and whether it needs to be corrected.

What’s the difference between compromise and capitulation? Compromise trades concessions. Capitulation pays ransom to stop deliberate suffering, and teaches your opponent that coercion works. There are effective responses to coercive bargaining. What we saw was not one of them.

A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

this morning, ICE went into a Spanish language immersion daycare and took a teacher from the building in front of screaming and crying kids and parents at dropoff and the daycare had to shut down for the day (near Lane Tech, where they were yesterday). Really hoping today's "theme" is not "daycare."

student newspaper's contentThe director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.

I spoke to a Venezuelan woman who was arrested in this raid and later released with her 4yo son. She said agents broke down their door, pointed guns at them and made sexualized remarks about Venezuelan women. When she returned to her apartment it was boarded up and all her possessions were gone.

There are thousands of residents who are supposed to start in less than a month in hospitals across the US who cannot enter the country. There is going to be a major staffing crisis across the country but especially in rural and urban hospitals than rely on international medical graduates. #MedSky

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants. Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

Even established authoritarian regimes consider arresting defiant judges an extreme tactic—a serious escalation usually reserved for after one-party rule is firmly entrenched. Seeing a judge arrested in the US today should alarm everyone who values democratic governance. This cannot be allowed. 🧵
